We literally have millions of people dying or having their lives ruined for reasons that didn’t exist in this country prior to the late sixties, and nobody on the left seems to give a shit

That must explain the penchant we non-Republicans have for a society that provides an education, health care, and social services: we don’t give a shit about people’s lives or livelihoods. Good call.

But you’ll recall (or possibly not) that it is one of your number who argued that poor people should die from lack of access to health care in the world’s wealthiest nations if preventing such results in less money for him (and lawyers don’t generally suffer financially), then cravenly tried to hide his avarice behind his imaginary God. You’ll certainly recall that the wife of your former leader didn’t want her beautiful mind troubled by the thoughts of all the corpses resulting from her sons policies, policies that you support.

> I don’'t think you understand. The problem isn’t that I don’t know the good old days are gone. The problem is that they are. We literally have millions of people dying or having their lives ruined for reasons that didn’t exist in this country prior to the late sixties, and nobody on the left seems to give a shit. So how about waking up and admitting that your way of thinking about things causes far worse problems than it solves, and start taking steps to correct them?

YOU don’t understand. Those good old days were not so good for anyone who wasn’t a white male. That’s what people have been trying to tell you. Women and people of color did not have the same legal rights as white males, and Og help you if you were a woman of color. Yes, some women and some people of color were able to bypass the barriers that were put in their way. Most of them, though, had enough to do to just scramble through life, just as most men just scramble through life.

We’ve always had illegitimate births and teen pregnancies. I regard teen pregnancies as a tragedy, whether or not the teen(s) in question are married. Apparently, you think that everything is A-OK if the girl is pregnant at 14 or 15, as long as she’s married. And how many kids have crushes on inappropriate people at that age? When I think back to the guys that I was obsessed with when I was a freshman in highschool, for instance, I’m VERY glad that I didn’t end up marrying them. Yes, I’m still in touch with some of them. But if I’d gotten knocked up by and had to marry one of them, both the guy and I would have had a spectacularly unhappy marriage.

We’ve always had drugs and diseases, too. For instance, laudanum was extremely popular in Victorian times…not surprisingly. It was legal opium in an alcoholic base, and it was used by all classes for all manner of ills. Cocaine was touted as a cure for all ills, too. I was friends with an old, old woman, who worked as a nurse before penicillin and other antibiotic drugs were developed. She used to tell me about how people were treated for STDs back in her time. A man would pick up gonorrhea or syphillis, and pass it on to his wife, who would have babies infected with the disease. And since this was before penicillin, treatment wasn’t just a case of getting a shot or course of pills…for gonorrhea, for instance, it involved injections of mercury, among other things. And of course the vector was merrily passing on the infection to everyone else. The big difference between HIV/AIDS and other STDs is that HIV will kill untreated patients relatively quickly.

Made excuses for torturers? That one takes the cake. I can’t imagine why anyone who supported Bush’s policies on torture thinks they have the moral high ground. The torture supporters and the moral high ground are on different planets.

> Why is this a bad thing? I mean, it’s not like we don’t have conservatives holding rallies and burning Korans. Not that I approve of burning Korans just to get a rise out of Muslims, but still, my original question still stands.

Do you really not know about the nearly incalculable damage caused by the uncontrolled draft card/bra fires of the 60’s?

Of course not, just more evidence of the indoctrination powers of Norman Lear’s evil writing skills. If instead of watching _All in the Family_ you’d have only watched _The NBC Monday Night Movie_ there’d have been a chance you’d only become a moderate instead of full-blown CommieLiberalPinko!

Yes, _AitF_ was just 30 minutes out of 63 hours of programing (not including your, non-network, local stations) but Lear and his henchmen controlled all of television.

The [Prime Time TV Schedule for 1975-1976](http://www.super70s.com/Super70s/TV/1975-76.asp), arguably the height of Lear’s sinister power.
Just look at all this Learist indoctrination;
ABC: Barbary Coast (Piracy, need I say more.) / Monday Night Football (A lone white man, with only an irregularly shaped ball to defend himself, chased by large Black men. While other large Black men, wearing the same clothes as him, watch and do little to protect him!)
CBS: Rhoda / Phyllis / All in the Family / Maude / Medical Center (Socialized medicine anyone?)
NBC: Invisible Man (The social and intellectual issues facing African-Americans in the early twentieth century, including black nationalism, the relationship between black identity and Marxism, and the reformist racial policies of Booker T. Washington.) / NBC Monday Night Movie
and look at Wednesday;
ABC: When Things Were Rotten (Anarcho-socialists conducting class warfare from their secret terrorist training camp in the woods.) / That’s My Mama / Baretta (The exploits of a Black pimp and the White Police officer who can do nothing to stop him.) / Starsky and Hutch (Just one of the many “buddy ;)” cop shows paving the road of acceptance for homosexual “relationships”.)
CBS: Tony Orlando and Dawn (An interracial threesome.) / Cannon (Fat acceptance PC!) / Kate McShane
NBC: Little House on the Prairie / Doctors’ Hospital (more socialized medicine!) / Petrocelli
I think **SA** ’s point is proven!

CMC fnord!

> There is simply no excuse for the fact that 50% of working Americans have been deemed so poor by their government that they need to have their way paid by the other 50%.

Absolutely.

The increasing gap between the wealthy in our society and the working poor has been growing and growing.

The US currently sits at #73 among world countries on the GINI index, measuring the inequality of distribution of wealth. This puts it amongst esteemed countries such as Turkmenistan, Ghana, Senegal and Cambodia.

This inequality has been increasing since the 1970’s and the US is one of the very few developed countries where this figure has **increased** since 1980. And I don’t think that this growing inequality is because the poor are stupid or lazy.

If this trend continues, there will be no middle left.

Yet those who have an increasing amount of the wealth in our society continue to whine like little children “no fair! no fair!” They are not content with the vast majority of the wealth. They want it all.

They don’t care about raising everyone’s standard of living. They only feel good if they are much, much wealthier than everyone else by comparison.

I gues you’re unfamiliar with Newt Gingrich’s GOPAC memo. Or the list of the 25 worst figures in American History that ranked [JImmy Carter](http://rightwingnews.com/bloggers-select/conservative-bloggers-select-the-25-worst-figures-in-american-history/) number one, ahead of John Wilkes Booth and Timothy McVeigh.

> Certainly, I can. But there were no injustices comparable to the ones blacks had been subjected to, yet look how they demonstrated in the early to mid sixties. They were well-dressed, dignified and non-violent, and sought to acheive equality through the simple expedient of their humanity. And they had made great strides prior to the late sixties, thereby proving that screaming obscenities and burning things was not necessary in order to bring about change.
>
> Now, contrast that with the behavior of leftist students on the college campuses of the time. Or at the 1968 Democratic convention. And look at what has been the nature of the dialog with regard to women’s rights, abortion, social programs, welfare, universal health care, taxes and redistribution of income. In each and every case, the left has approached the issue with hatred toward their opponents. Anyone not toeing the party line on these issues is subject to accusations of selfishness, stupidity, greediness, evil, a desire to beat or keep people down or see them dying in the streets, etc., etc., etc.
>
> It is simply impossible in this country to oppose anything the left favors without coming in for this type of behavior from the left. And it’s going on perhaps even moreso to this very day as the OP of this thread clearly demonstrates, where you have the leader of the Senate and a member of the House of Representatives claiming that Republicans are wanting to kill women.
>
> It is that hatred and intolerance by people of the left for anyone who disagrees with them that I was talking about and not that there weren’t injustices that needed to be addressed.
>
> Do you know how many conservatives have a yacht or mansion? Do you know how many work at normal, everyday jobs, and struggle to pay their bills and educate their children? And do you know how large of a proportion of their income goes to fund services for people who don’t pay any income tax, which is now said to be fully half the working population? I doubt if two out of every hundred conservatives is even a millionaire, and of those who are I’d wager that most of that wealth lies in the value of their homes and/or businesses, and that less than two out of a hundred of them even has a yacht or mansion. So why then are conservatives so overwhelmingly in favor of reduced government spending and lower taxes? It’s because 98% of them aren’t wealthy, and because they are philosophically opposed to government-enforced redistribution of income. It is very difficult to make large amounts of money. If it weren’t, everyone would be wealthy. So conservatives think it is deeply unfair and unjust to take money from people who’ve fought the battles and managed to earn it, and then just give it away to somebody else just because they’ve opted for the 9-to-5 worker drone life and that doesn’t pay for their needs, which usually includes at least two cars, big-screen televisions, plenty to eat, weekends at the lake and…well, you get the picture.
>
> There is simply no excuse for the fact that 50% of working Americans have been deemed so poor by their government that they need to have their way paid by the other 50%. > And this stuff about the upper 5% “skimming the cream” off the labor of the rest of us is just so much class war horsecrap, if you’ll pardon the term. The wealthy make the money they do by providing goods and services that people want badly enough to turn loose of the money to pay for. They invest their money and take the risks and strive to economize and innovate in order to stay in business. They amount they pay for labor is a balance between what those people will work for and what they can afford to pay and still stay in business and make a profit. Most businesses, if they are successful, earn a net profit before taxes of around 8 to 10%. When you consider that amounts at risk and the effort it takes to stay abreast of regulations and market forces while at the same time trying to innovate and keep up with and contend with the competition, that is not an excessive profit at all.
>
> This stuff about the upper 5% taking advantage of the lowly worker is just another example of the kind of rhetoric I was talking about before. Why not just argue that you think govenment-enforced equality of pay for everyone is the way that societies should operate? Because that’s all it boils down to. There is no truth whatsoever to the liberal conceit that wealthy people are taking unfair advantage of the working class and seeking to keep them down. This kind of rhetoric is almost the exact same rhetoric the left used in claiming men of the past sought to take advantage of women and keep them down, when the reality was nothing of the sort.
>
> I can assure you that conservatives in this country are angry as hell. They think that everything that has made this country great is being destroyed, both socially and economically. They look around at the state this country is in and absolutely cannot believe it. But you don’t see us taking over buildings and burning tax forms and calling our opponents evil and selfish and stupid and marching in front of IRS buildings chanting “Fuck you, BHO, how much of what’s ours are you gonna steal today?” And in my opinion the liberal propensity to act that way is a large part of the reason for the hatred that exists in politics and American society today, and worst of all, most of it is blatantly dishonest and deliberately intended to falsely inflame the passions of the masses - as the behavior of Reid and Slaughter in the OP so illustrate so well.

**Starving Artist** is right. The southern whites may have lynched black people set dogs and fire hoses on them, beat them with ax handles, taunted little girls going to school, and put them in jails for crimes they didn’t commit, but they went to church and called people Sir and Mam which in the end is what counts.

I remember too that the dirty hippies were beaten, jailed, and shot. I’m grateful my marine Lt. bro came home from that fruitless war when Nixon finally listened. You selectively remember and leave out the rights reaction to the left. Also I recall the Watts riots and Black Panther killings.

It is also difficult to make small amounts of money, to make yourself get up every day and work hard for subsistence wages. Opted for 9 to 5? Many do not have a choice. Many lack the advantages some of us recieved. Two cars? Try ONE that runs or they can figure how to work on because they can’t afford a mechanic. Big screen? Try three channels, or if they have a big screen consider that is all the entertainment they can afford. Weekends at the lake? A picnic and fishing with family for a pitance you would begrudge them?

50%? The gap between rich and the rest is growing isn’t it? At 10% unemployed that leaves 40% making less than 16 grand a year. Have you ever tried to live on that? I can’t imagine that in this age. I don’t know how they do it. Have you ever been sent home from the emergency room because you had no insurance although one pupil was larger and one side of your body growing numb? It happens. They struggle every day for the basics. While the rest of us try to save for a trip to Europe they worry how they will buy Christmas presents for thier kids. I guess kids are a luxury they shouldn’t allow themselves either. Need to fund another abstinence program I guess.

It is as ridiculous as it is unfair. Yes it is, and I don’t begrdge them from the taxes I pay.

I know how hard it is. Every day I know. Most small businesses don’t make the 250 grand profit which is the limit before the extra taxes kick in. It’s hard. Not as hard as living on minimum wage, but hard. A good kind where you give it your best and go home to a nice house in a nice neihborhood. Not everyone gets that. I’m grateful.

There it is. Every time someone brings up compassion the right yells COMMIE! Nevermind that nearly every civilized country in the world has working government health care that the citizens are mostly happy with. Bunch of commie bastard red menace creepers. I’m sure the wealthy just want the rest to eat cake. Liberal conceit? Money doesn’t trickle down it gushes up! I HAVE heard Limbaugh and others call liberals evil and stupid and all manner of names. I’ve heard all manner of vile shit so don’t give me that innocent crap. I’ve seen big corporate lobby congress though the poor have no lobby. I’ve seen TV and radio bought for the purpose of 24-7 talking the poor into voting against thier own best interests and that of compassion. Lord knows the wealthy need more money more than the poor.
