One for the Guys: Ever Get a Straight Edge Razor Shave from the Barber?

Some people are just stuck in the past. I prefer a barber who uses a modern 1960s shaving cream dispenser.

My current barber does the back of my neck and edges of my beard with a straight razor for no extra charge. (A real one that she dips in barbacide before use) Back before I had a full beard I had a barber give me a shave twice, two different barbers. IMHO it seems that the quality of the barber has a lot to do with how good an experience it is. The first time it was a gift from a friend and I went to a fancy “old timey” barber shop in LA and spent about $150 of my friends money for a straight razor shave and a haricut. The result was sort of meh.

A few years later I found a fantastic legitimatly old school barber who was about 70 years old and had been cutting hair since he was like 16. Not only did he consistently give me the best haircut I have ever had, he did it in about 10 minutes and I never had to pay more than $20. He was the first person to do my neck and sideburns with a straight razor. One day I decided to get the full shave treatment from him too, and it was fantastic. Very close, very clean, also fast and nice. A better shave than I typically gave myself and I got to sit back and let someone else do the work.

I decided to grow a beard shortly after that, so I only did it the once but I could see getting it done again.

In the aftermath of AIDS most states prohibit shaving more than one person with the same blade.

that reminds me: Jim Nabors’ underwent a liver transplant after contracting hepatitis B from a straight razor shave while on vacation in India.

I know, I know…he’s gay, its a sex tourism destination, he used his beard as a beard. But I had a family Hep C situation: the doctor said sex was OK, but sharing razors and toothbrushes were verboten.

I’m going to say no, but my current barberettes shave the back of my neck with a straight razor, it’s quite pleasant.

I’ve only had the back of neck/sideburns shave.

My father claimed it was one of life’s real luxuries and that I should at least do it on my wedding day. So I did. Disaster. The barber was utterly incompetent. He scratched me something awful and I didn’t even get a close shave. Never again. That was over 48 years ago and I haven’t shaved in over 47.

No, but I would love to. I don’t know if places in the Valley do that, especially since I save my head.

Every month. Straihtedge (disposable), towel, machine massage.
The same guy for the last 20 years. Just when the beard is 1cm away for a Biblical patriarch I go down a bir over fuzz, but in such a nice, simmetrical, way I couldn’t do it.
When I go beardless (a couple of monnths in summer) I do shave myself, bur shave-and-still-have-a-beard, 21 soles ($8) does it for me.
Also , I get my hair cut, another 21.

It’s a nice relaxing moment I don’t have to say a word.

Back of the neck, sideburns and also the old flaming cotton for ear hair!

I had a barber shave me about 20 years ago just to find out. I was not impressed.

I’ve never heard of getting a haircut and not being shaved at the same time. It’s an integral part of the service that can’t be separated. That’s the whole reason the the adult fee is double the $6 they charge for boys. Although the clean shave doesn’t last long, it’s my motivation to get to the barber shop every few months. I normally use a cartridge razor but I’ve tried hot towels and a safety razor. It’s not as good as a skilled barber with a deadly weapon in his hand.

PS: he also gets those ear hairs better than I ever could

Last time I was in Melbourne I went to a place that did cut-throat razor shaves.

It was fantastic. Best shave I’ve ever had, and afforable too. And the really interesting thing? The barber was a young woman (not generally known for their facial hair and beards, I’m sure we can agree).

The only barbers I’ve found up here who will do them are generally quite expensive (the training’s quite specialised from a hairdressing perspective, apparently) and I’m told there just isn’t the demand for them here that there is in Melbourne.

Yes, every Thursday morning when I am in Saudi Arabia. Haircut with scissors, shave with straight razor and finished with hot wax and string, then a massage. I pay about US$26.

I do not even bother with the barbers in the US.

No, and the idea would creep me the hell out. It’s not that they’ll mess up so much as the idea that I might move and cause them to mess up. When I actually have to sit still, I have a hard time doing so.

Good barbers are constantly adjusting to your movements. Unless you make a really big move while the edge is on you, getting cut is almost impossible.

I’ve had one before and I absolutely loved it.

Unfortunately I’ve moved so I no longer have my old barber. I haven’t found anyone good yet.

I can believe that having heard the podcast on Planet Money about the state of Utah prohibiting a woman from doing african hair braiding without a license..

My barber Joyce.. in Chicago on the southside.. she could do it with a razor.. it felt great..

Straight edge, yes. But one of those disposable ones described above. He used to have big badass straight edge he brought over from Lebanon with him, but my mother refused to let me get shaved with it. Which is a shame, because I’m really, REALLY horrible at shaving.
