One (Good) Sequel Only - The Rarest of Hollywood Feats

Shagnasty:

Airplane II had many of the same stars, but not the same writing and directing teams – check it out on iMDB. I’m prettyy astonished not only that Airplane II turned out as good as it did, but that it was able to keep up the same sort of manic style. Most films where they change such major horses in midstream can’t do that – look at RoboCop and RoboCop II.

That’s what I was going to say. I’m surprised it took so long for someone to nominate them. Both fantastic movies.

Batman (Directed by Tim Burton, starring Michael Keaton) and Batman Returns (directed by Tim Burton, starring Michael Keaton).
Wayne’s World.

Bill and Ted (as mentioned upthread).

Kill Bill vol I & II

Peter Cushing’s two Doctor Who movies.

I thought of those, but Linklater, Hawke, and Delpy have all said they want to do another one.

I hope they do.

That was always intended to have two thought wasn’t it?

Given that the title of the first movie includes “Vol. I”, its probably a safe bet that you are correct…

Well, I thought The Legend of Zorro was a pretty good followup to The Mask of Zorro. YMMV.
