I don’t know if this made the national news or not. It was pretty big news locally here in Colorado Springs. > [@](#): > > As a teenage sailor, Donald Stratton survived burns over two-thirds of his body when the USS Arizona exploded amid the surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. > > The Colorado Springs resident, revered locally for his wartime service, spent the rest of his life encouraging others to remember the 1,177 of his shipmates from the battlewagon who died that day. He died at home Saturday at 97. Stratton had been in failing health since contracting pneumonia in October. > **[Colorado Springs USS Arizona 'hero' Donald Stratton dies at 97](https://gazette.com/news/colorado-springs-uss-arizona-hero-donald-stratton-dead-at/article_b1d47c16-50dc-11ea-8f3d-43340ab4b236.html)** > > One of the few remaining USS Arizona survivors and Colorado Springs local, Donald Stratton, passed away Saturday. ---
