This took place at the “third party candidate” debate. Seems to me that there’s a “worst rendition of the national anthem” thread every few months. Maybe you (Americans) shouldn’t have someone sing it if before anyone letting out a public fart, and the chances for botched performances would diminish. ---

My enunciation would be clearer, and hopefully I would know I was live so I wouldn’t stop in the middle and drop the F-bomb. But on the whole, she sings our hideous national anthem so much better than I could. I’m almost tempted to record myself singing The Star Spangled Banner with great gusto, just so I can appreciate how ear-destroyingly bad it would sound. ---

Well, we did steal the melody from the Brits, as it was originally a drinking song of sorts (“To Anacreon in Heaven”). So you can’t blame us for the nearly unsingable tune. And imagine how much worse it would sound with a pub full of drunks trying to hit the high notes… ---

It’s a pretty difficult tune to sing to. We don’t really do that patriotism-stuff here and I cant remember the last time I heard the National Anthem strike up at some social/sporting function. ---

Every time they (the DFB) tried to pull off the “semi-popular musical act singing the German anthem like Americans use to do”, it failed absolutely spectacularly. They should have learned by now, nobody wants it, everybody hates it, it’s the worst kind of “Fremdschämen” (shame by proxy) imaginable. ETA: I’m reminded how the DFB also tried to establish a half time show, Super Bowl like, in the DFB cup final a few years ago, when Helene Fischer sang one (some?) of her inane schlager ditties to the whole stadium booing and whistling. At Yankee Stadium you get the National Anthem before the game and _God Fucking Bless America_ during the seventh inning stretch, all because Steinbrenner was yet another phony magatrash ‘patriot.’ ---

One of the great benefits of being someone that has no interest in professional sports is I don’t have to listen to the gawd awful national anthems. Even a ‘good’ performance of shitty music is crap. ---
