HPL think of the green onions you get in the grocery store. The green part on your onion is the same thing. The standard “onion” part is actually a modified stem that stores carbohydrates. It will sprout in the dark in the correct temperatures just like tulip bulbs will sprout. No sunlight necessary, as they’d be buried anyway.

'Kay, I have a loooovely story for you. I hadn’t cleaned out my vegetable bin in some time. This was a drawer in the cabinet, as opposed to the crisper in the fridge. Well, my potatoes grew INTO THE WALL! Firmly rooted, with sprouty things going crazy all over the place. It was a big project to get them out. I’ve since stuck to storing spuds in the fridge.
