Only 36 but I have cataracts - anyone else young?

Yup - I don’t even notice, my brain takes care of all the adjustments automatically. The only POSSIBLE issue (and I’m not sure it is even related) is that my night vision without glasses is a bit blurry. It’s as if during the day my distance-vision lens dominates for distance vision, but at night my close-up lens dominates no matter what (resulting in blurs) if I am looking at bright objects (car headlights and tail-lights, lane markers). But glasses take care of it completely, and I can have razor-sharp vision at night if I wear them.

I’ve heard some doctors don’t like to do the one-eye-for-reading, one-for-distance arrangement, but my doctor suggested it and I’ve never had reason to doubt him. I have no idea why some physicians might be opposed to it.

I have contact lenses and my optometrist put me on the monovision as well. It works for me, but she did say that if someone doesn’t have a dominant hand and is more ambidextrous, it’s less likely to work. Maybe they don’t want to take that chance when replacing the lenses?

I’m not very daring, given my anxiety, lol. So when the time comes, I’ll probably do monofocal for distance & just get used to wearing glasses or contacts for near vision if needed.

I’m such a highly anxious person & worrier. I haven’t even scheduled surgery or decided to have it anytime soon and I’m already having panic attacks about it. Ugh. :frowning:

Some people do this with laser surgery as well (Lasik etc.). I know someone who did so and was thrilled. The concept horrifies me.

Bear in mind, my eyes have significantly different prescriptions anyway (2+ diopters, and I’m not super-duper nearsighted) and I can’t wear progressive lenses as a result - a full-on progressive pair causes me instant headache plus rage that has nearly had me jumping up and down on those glasses, screaming incoherently as I smash them.

So, I may be an outlier, but the concept of having that kind of discrepancy and quite possibly pain would have me running as fast and as far as I could go before letting them NEAR me.

No, not since I stopped wearing contact lenses.

hi im 36 and found out dec 2015 i had cataracs in both eyes.My left is really bad right a little better. My eyesight started to go in the sept and it was so quick i actually thought i had a tumour.I went to an eye doctor middle of dec (i havent had my eyes tested in 10yrs).She asked family history and i mentioned my dad had both his eyes done for cataracs in the last 12 months hes 55.She said it was very unusual to have it so young (there was me thinking 55 was a normal age for this) 30 mins later she tell me i have a very fast growing type of cataracs in both eyes.Since then my eyes sight has rapidly deteriated to the point i can hardly see anything futher than maybe 30ft with any real definition out of my left eye.Luckily i have been given the go ahead to have the opp next month and cant wait as it has really effected my life having such poor eyesight the glasses i was originally given in dec make no diiference at all now :frowning:

My mom’s baby brother had cataracts when he was 20.
