I will say… my wife agrees with the Slate piece. Not with the vitriol but she doesn’t like Short as a performer. She always said he seems “desperate” as a performer.
She likes the show but he’s her least favorite part.
No! Martin Short’s whole career is a Trbute to the Greats of Tinseltown, the Great White Way, the off-Great off-White Way, to all Oscar, Emmy and Tony speeches, to Mickey Rooney on the Merv Griffin show and Everyone who ever Dared to Dream!
I’m assuming everyone has seen the episode that just aired:
I thought I heard that this would be the final season (and Steve Martin would be retiring). I was kinda surprised when they left us with a ‘teaser’ for Season 4. And, at least left it up to us to assume, Steve Martin would still be on the show.
Speaking of which, I watched that scene twice (before the reveal, but specifically to see if it was Steve or Jane) and I’d swear that was Steve walking around in the dark apartment.
She likes the show but he’s her least favorite part.
I’ve never been the biggest fan of him, and his appearance in Arrested Development didn’t help, but I really liked him here. I think he did a great job of finding his character’s shtick, and using it with restraint, letting guide the character instead of going full Flanders right out of the gate.
Well, at least KT had a couple of lines. I’m calling that a moral victory.
The Hulu mystery series stars Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin.
I didn’t like season three quite as much as the first two, but I’m glad it got renewed. By the way, I think Mabel looked fabulous in that sequin dress.
My S4 prediction is they’re all going to LA for various reasons and there’ll be a new building for there to be murders in. It was heavily hinted at and would be a nice change of pace, like when Jessica Fletcher left Cabot Cove because you can only have so many murders in one building. And as for the new “dead body”, they might not be dead or they find clues in LA
I can’t imagine (and I’m not sure if it’s what you were intending) that Sazz’s murder is a red herring or a McGuffin or even just an unrelated thing that happened.
Maybe it could be that someone from the film industry in LA was attempting to kill either Charles or Sazz, which would give our guys a reason to go out there. Plus it’s probably easier, IRL, to film in LA than NY, especially if Martin Short or Selena Gomez are filming something else (in LA) as the show winds down.
In a few minutes of research, I couldn’t figure out where the original run of Brazzos was filmed. The reboot was in NY, but I couldn’t tell if the first run was as well. I also didn’t see any references to Sazz working there and I don’t recall if she ever mentioned being there. I don’t think Charles has been there during the show (or recently before it) and he certainly hasn’t been working out there. My thinking being that it could be someone from LA that sees either Sazz or Charles as a threat to their career.
Was Matthew Broderick at the after party?
Having said all that, if the target was supposed to be Charles, I’ll be disappointed if we don’t get a Spaceballs reference (preferably the actual line).
Sazz told Charles they might be after him at the theatre, when the bags of sand almost hit him.
Sazz also told Charles that she wanted to talk to him about something ‘sensitve, in private’ sometime before the shooting - its unclear if they had that conversation, my guess is not and Charles will say something to the affect of ‘I wonder what she wanted to tell me’.
Sazz was clearly about to smudge something on the floor with her blood - a tried and true method of passing along clues.
I’m betting it was Jeff Bakula.
Things you’ll never hear me say: showrunner, director, writer (singular/plural) S1 or S-anything, episode (well hardly), other “insider” stuff I am not and I suspect none of you are privy to. Damn internet is spoiling TV.
Hey, didja notice, this was a Three-Martin season?
Finally watched the last episode. Did not see it coming who the murderer was! I laughed when Oliver made one last reference to the five
women as whores
but pronounced it the Irish way as hoors.
I just realized that I should have known who the killer was from the beginning. The season ended with a Cliff hanger. Literally.
I got a kick out of Matthew Broderick enjoying Uma’s company.
They certainly put the podcast to the side in this season. I guess we are to assume they put out episodes at some point but I don’t see when they had the time.
I think we can assume a Scott Bakula costarring role in season 4.
That lady who played Loretta was really good. I expect great things from her.
As a high school kid SNL did nothing for me. I stayed up late late to watch SCTV. Any anti-Martin Short talk makes me want to fight.

I think Mabel was supposed to be doing it on her own (with help from Tobert). That could have just been a way for the writers to keep her, and the podcast, as an ongoing B Plot while Charles and Oliver were working on the musical.
I was just thinking about one part of the finale that bothered me. This was at the after party; after the Cliff hanger but before the cliffhanger.
Loretta is talking about all these opportunities. Most likely it will take her to California. I don’t remember the exact language but it felt like everyone was moving on.
You just put on a Broadway play. You had a successful opening night with good reviews. You didn’t make a movie. Everyone is under contract to do 8 shows a week for probably 6 months or more. No one is going anywhere. Sure the director doesn’t have to be there every night but Charles and Loretta are certainly locked in for awhile.
I watched most of S3 over the weekend, but didn’t watch the finale until last night.
I really enjoy this show, and everyone in it. I thought it was a great season. I was so glad they got the likes of Marc Shaiman, Benj Pasek, Sara Bareilles, etc. to write the musical numbers (talent to match the performers). And Meryl Streep has long been a national goddamn treasure.
I’ve seen her in other things, she is very much playing a particular part here, and that includes the flat affect and voice, neither of which are her normal demeanour or voice.
Good to note, thanks! Mabel’s delivery started to bug me a little, but I don’t think I’ve seen Selena Gomez in anything else so I didn’t know whether it was the actor or the character. Knowing it’s the character makes it more palatable. I don’t remember noticing in in S1 or S2; even in S3 it was a minor thing.
“Director” and “writer” are insider stuff? How the hell do you talk about the movies you’ve watched without ever mentioning a writer or director?
You pretend it’s all real! Oh you people! I tell you, I’m the guy in the movie theater who shouts NO! when someone gets blown up or a car crashes.
I find it’s hard to get a date.
Anyway, I do talk about actors - the people you see on the screen or onstage. And if I were to run into Willem Dafoe on the street, POW! I’d punch his lights out. He was so evil in Wild at Heart. Remember, Bobby Peru?

To me–Mabel always sounds like she just had dental surgery and can’t fully open her mouth yet. Regular Selena Gomez is kind of a naturally deadpan…so close but not the same.
can’t fully open her mouth yet
I commented way earlier that I figured she (Mabel) would have enunciated more when talking to Theo so he’d at least have a chance of understanding what she’s saying. Even if it was a character choice, Theo could have asked her to.
Interestingly, when I looked at what I wrote, I also mentioned that “Theo gave Mabel a card saying that he can read lips but he’ll only understand about a third of what she says.” And now I’m curious if he meant “I can only understand about a third of what you [Mabel] saying” or “…of what you [anyone] is saying”. It’s also possible that it I misremembered the exact wording of what he wrote.
