> It should be noted that the Quebec/Code Napoleon and Rest of Canada/British Common Law business applies only to civil law, which is set at the provincial level. The criminal law is national and is common-law based. As far as the civil law goes, the situation is similar to the US model, with ten different systems for the ten provinces, and the three territories using a single federally determined civil law system. The fact that Quebec’s system has a different basis is not a major issue, as the current provincial systems all have significant differences anyway.

[continuejack] And under the US Flag, Louisiana and Puerto Rico use Civil Code Law (Napoleonic and Spanish, respectively) locally. [/continuejack] But still the idea is that within one same jurisdiction, every person is subject to the same law and has the same rights,as recognized by the state.

> **Chappachula** you were already told you’re wrong about this in the other thread. Canada currently has TWO MAJOR legal systems: the Neploeonic Code; the British Common Law. So clearly Canada (a society) CAN function when it has multiple legal systems.
>
> Also, this has nothing to do with slippery slopes, or Muslims wanting to impose Shari’a law on the rest of Canada.

So why did Dalton McGuinty justify it by saying “there will be ONE law for all Ontarians”?He realized that is _is_ an issue of slippery slopes.
l
The “two systems” you speak of are not really two totally different legal systems–they are both based on the same principles. They are no more different from each other than the 50 states in America, which all have slightly different variations on the same laws. Some states allow capital punishment, others don’t–but none of them allows women to be treated the way Sharia law does…
