I’ve taken to cutting my round pizza in squares. First you get more servings 12 vs 8 thus there may be leftovers which means pizza for breakfast! Second, there’s more crusty pieces and more loaded middle pieces, everyone is happy, third the squares are smaller bites yet just as filling as a triangle.
If I were to order an extra large pie in cut in triangles I’d want to cut down the 8 big slices in half again.
Sorry but that is fucking bizarre and I’d be annoyed too if I got a round pie cut like that. That means the pieces are not equal and the center ones don’t have a crust to hold while the outer ones are like half crust.
Pizza cutting is definitely regional. As is the array of acceptable toppings, the thickness of crust, mix of cheeses, etc.
The odd thing to me isn’t people not from Michigan / the Midwest being surprised by square-cut extra large pizzas. It’s the local customer there in small-town Michigan being surprised by square-cut extra large pizzas.
And if you want 12 pieces, cut into 6 even triangle pieces (not difficult) then cut each one of those in half. I’ve done it myself with large pizzas I’ve cooked at home.
Even with pizza cut into sectors (or “pie triangles” or whatever you call them), the pieces might not be equal if the person doing the cutting wasn’t careful.
Domino’s (at least in my experience) uses a square cut on their “thin and crispy crust” style pizza, which makes sense to me: the edge crust isn’t significantly different from the rest of the pizza. They use a traditional triangle cut on all their other styles.
Their first issue with the insurance company, too much clutter in yard, was found by drone. The company had several drone photos and forced them to do yard cleanup. They suspect that they are now being regularly monitored and reviewed by drone, and leaving their garage open is apparently now an issue. They are currently trying to find a better insurance company.
II rarely have to deal with extra-large pizzas so it’s always triangles. It seems like a natural way to eat it, gradually working toward the crust which acts as a convenient handle. Sandwiches are often cut diagonally for somewhat similar reasons.
The pizzas that are baked in-store at a local supermarket are quite large (probably 16") and sliced in large triangles. They’re sold either whole or by the slice, where a “slice” is about a quarter of the pizza. I subdivide it after I bring it home and some of the narrower pieces have to be supported with the other hand as you munch, but hey, that’s what eating pizza is all about! I’d certainly never fold it. If that’s “New York style”, it’s certainly not my style!
If I was served pizza in squares, I’d cut it across diagonally to make triangles!
When I was a child there was a local pizza chain called “Square Pan Pizza,” which did the otherwise unheard-of square thing. Everyone else did triangles. So for me, triangles = normal, square = weird but kind of fun.
