# Oolong Appreciation Thread

I mentioned Oolong in an attempt to cheer up **Lynn Bodoni** and her cat, Achilles in [this thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=328804).
I didn’t want to hijack the thread to answer Shirley’s question, tho, so I started this one.
Oolong was a much beloved pet who exhibited the rather unusual ability to balance things on his head. His owner, photographer Hironori Akutagawa, took hundreds of pictures of Oolong performing what he called “ **Head Performances** ” and began posting them online ([translated page link](http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=http://www.fsinet.or.jp/~sokaisha/rabbit/rabbit.htm&prev=/search%3Fq%3Doolong%2Brabbit%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D)). They were eventually discovered and linked to many times, so much so that Oolong is now an internet meme. Wikipedia has [a great article about Oolong](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oolong_the_Rabbit), but the most far-reaching publicity came from [a website called Syberpunk](http://www.syberpunk.com/cgi-bin/index.pl?page=oolong), which is about nifty Japanese pop culture stuff.
Sadly, Oolong passed away on January 7th. His memory will live forever in the photographs and writings of his best friend, however.
Thank you, Oolong and Mr. Akutagawa for sharing with the rest of the world and helping to bring a smile to my face (and so many others).

I saw that picture you posted, went a googled around a bit and found Syberpunk and Hironori Akutagawa’s page. I’ve been browsing the pictures today, I just love them. Oolong is such an adorable rabbit and look - he can balance

I found out about Oolong just before he passed away, and checked on the pictures of him frequently. I can honestly say I cried when I saw the pics of the funeral.
The bunny holds a special place for me; my AIM icon is the pancake bunny, and friends of mine, in appreciation, have made a plush pancake bunny who sits atop my computer.
