The butler _didn’t_ do it. It was the one character who didn’t seem to have any point to his/her existence in the cast. The dog gets rabies and the kid has to shoot it. Ditto the deer. Except for the rabies part. I don’t think deer get rabies. _Both_ dogs die and are buried where the red fern grows. Charlotte dies and has lots of babies. Sounder isn’t dead. But he dies at the end for double the emotional scarring. ---

The guy with the limp who just walked out the door was the mastermind villan all along. The supposedly slow-witted kid with the split personality was lying the whole time. The boogeyman in the woods is just a ploy to keep people from discovering the truth. It was all a bad dream. ---
