Really, I don’t get it. Why are you being so…nasty? (Sorry if that choice of words gets me branded “Lame”, but I’ve never pitted a Doper before.) I get that you don’t believe [Fabulous Creature had a horrid experience in a psychiatric hospital.](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=366074&) But what’s with the call for personally identifiying information so you can somehow verify his claims? Why the hell should he tell you his address, the names of his doctors or any other private information? What would this gain you? Several people have chimed in that they had similar experiences and the story isn’t so far fetched. Why do you have to be a dick about it? Even if it is a total fabrication, so what? You haven’t articulated your actual concern. Are you worried that **Fab** ’s story will scare other people away from getting help? Then why don’t you provide some evidence that this is a statistic anomoly and other hospitals are not like this? (At least two posters in that thread who work at hospitals have done that - why not you?) I just don’t get why you think \*\*Fab \*\*should tell you any more details than he already has. The Dope is pretty damn good at protecting our privacy, to the level at which we want it protected. Plenty of people won’t even reveal what country they live in, and you want the name and physical decription of his doctor? WTF? ---

These passions will be the death of you.” Why ARE you getting so emotional, might I ask? I certainly hope my (hopefully highly atypical) experience does not scare anyone away from treatment. But I’ll say this: it scared ME away from treatment involving public health facilities at Memphis. During my assessment Monday morning, the doctor asked me (in response to my complaints about the lack of beds, appropriate diabetes treatment, etc) if I’d be willing to get treatment if I were someplace with a bed. The truest anwer to that was yes, so long as it was outpatient–but I replied No, because I had no more trust in her at that point than I do in Michael Milken. ---

I believe he said he IS seeking treatment, just not from this particular place. And hell no he shouldn’t be grateful-shitty treatment like that can be worse than none at all, because it often only exacerbates one’s condition! Jesus! I’m extremely pro-psychology and pro-therapy and even I think what happened was outrageous. ---

So you are apparently willing to believe everything that reflects negatively on **Fabulous Creature** , but nothing that reflects negatively on the facility? Actually, we know absolutely nothing about your experience regarding mental health issues, and as far as anybody else is concerned, you could equally well be fabricating your information on it. Regardless of the truth of the matter, on which I withhold judgement, you behaved in a highly obnoxious way in that thread. Acting like an asshole doesn’t do anything for your credibility, especially after **Fabulous Creature** provided some information that was potentially verifiable. Your message seems to be that no matter how bad your treatment is, you should be happy you get any. This is such an irresponsible and reprehensible attitude that it completely invalidates your credibility as a spokesperson for mental health treatment. My father, cousin, and several friends have all spent time in mental hospitals. I certainly would not have wanted anyone with your attitude associated with their care. ---

**Operation Ripper** , I must suggest that you find it too frightening to accept that things like what happened to **Fabulous Creature** do indeed occur in mental health treatment. Therefore **Fabulous Creature** _must_ be lying! The description given so totally matches my own experiences with locked wards, psych floors of regular hospitals, and psych triage wings of ERs that I’m certain it occurred exactly as noted. A piece of fiction by someone who hadn’t been there would not have gotten so many of the details right. And there simply isn’t much need for embellishment. ---
