I realize this makes me a horrible person, but… story-time, please!
One of the questions on applications for FCC licenses asks whether the Applicant or any controlling interest of the applicant has ever been convicted of a felony, and being convicted of a felony can be grounds for loss of license.
I love Don & Mike, I hope the sacking of O & A can put D & M on 3:00 to 7:00, their normal timeslot, I listen on WYSP in Philly, and their on from 11:00 to 3:00, making it impossible to listen to them.
I use to listen to D & M when I lived in Wash. DC, I was so glad when they came to Philly, I was actually hoping D & M would come to my listening area before O & A.
Remember the scene in Lord of the Flies where the group killed Piggy? Everyone chanting “Kill the pig, kill the pig.”? Take that scene, put it in a radio studio. Swap out the kids for a couple of guys, Piggy for a likely midly retarded near homeless woman that is totally dedicated to the previously mentioned guys, and remove the actual killing. I’m not going into any more detail than that. It was the worst thing I’ve ever heard on radio ever, anywhere.

Granted. They got absolutely no promotion in NYC, though. They could have been a failure regardless, but WYSP in Philly has treated D&M with much more, uh, interest, and their ratings there are solid.

Yeah. They probably wanted a reason to get dropped by WNEW other than bad ratings.
At the same time, though, they weren’t “feuding with O&A.” They decided to feud with O&A b/c they likely got tired of hearing every afternoon after they signed off how much their show sucked. So Don started reading ratings on the air, ratings not nearly as impressive as O&A said they were (though that’s deceptive too, since Don was primarily reading O&A’s less than stellar ratings in DC, a city O&A probably didn’t care all that much about anyway).
It’s pretty obvious what O&A’s plan was: position themselves as Infinity’s only hot talker, other than Stern (and Imus, not that they care about him anyway). That way, when/if Stern drops, O&A are the golden boys. It seems WNEW’s management was willing to try that.
Of course, it was a petty plan all along, b/c D&M never intend to surpass Stern and all O&A did was bring themselves down and (probably) their WNEW mates Ron & Fez as well.
Since O & A were canned, WJFK in Washington has been broadcasting the best of Don and Mike, followed by (I think) the actual D & M show.
