I enjoyed reading the Princes Bride and was really looking forward to the movie. Then I saw it. Bleah.

There are people who thought Gattacca was good?

Oh boy, this will be a long list and I’m sure I will make some enemies:

The Beatles
Elvis
Nirvanna
Rolling Stones
Radiohead (I like “Creep”, but that’s it…maybe cause it was the first one I heard.)
Jane’s Addiction (the last two I hate mostly because all their songs SOUND EXACTLY THE SAME!! Hence, I like “Creep”, but everything else I hear sounds like a ripoff of that. And Jane’s Addiciton…that lead singer’s voice is SOOOO annoying.)
Almost all rap, hip hop, and R&B.

Almost every “classic” movie (i.e., Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, It’s a Wonderful Life, film noir movies, Citizen Kane)
Anything Kubrick
ET
Shakespeare in Love
Dune (just movie, never read the book…the movie turned me off from it)

Almost all reality shows (I sometimes enjoy Fear facotr, if only to think to myself that I could do everything better than the idiots on it, 😛 )
NYPD Blue (Look at us! We’re being edgy for thesake of being edgy! Plot? What’s that?)
Emeril
CSI (Oddly enough, though, I like its “clones,” like House, Medical Investigation, and Crossing Jordon (though that’s probably less of a CSI clone than the other two.))

Terry Pratchett
John Grisham
Stephen King
the Sword of Truth series (I think this is the one I’m thinking of…it’s up to it’s tenth book, or something like that.)
Harry Potter

I also hate 99.9% of anime. I know anime is a broad catagory, and there are many differences between the shows. Dragonball Z is different than Pokemon which is different than Vampire Hunter D which is different than Akira, but I hate them all. I hate the cheesy, goofy ones (like Pokemon and DBZ,) and I hate the more serious ones (like Akira,) and the ones in between. I have found two series that I enjoyed, and that’s Robotech (i.e., the Americanized version of Macross and Mospeada, I think they were called,) and Record of Lodos War.

Damn, where to start?

**Dr. Strangelove**. I’m told over and over what a masterpiece it is, and I like so many other Kubrick films, but _not this one_.

**Richard Burton**. Did you ever wonder where William Shatner learned to act? From studying Burton’s films, that’s where. Gads.

I second **Seinfeld** , and add \*\*Friends \*\*(another ensemble cast of people I couldn’t care less about) and **Everybody Loves Raymond**. I don’t love Raymond. I’d like to hit him in the forehead with a framing hammer.

**Adam Sandler** , whose acting range encompasses an entire character.
**David Spade** , that obnoxious little bastard.
All **reality shows.** What the hell do people see in those?
**Clark Gable.** Another ham. And, I have yet to see a movie of his, regardless of the time period in which it is set, where he didn’t call his female lead “Baby.” WTF?

I’ll second that.

I’ll add _The Usual Suspects_. When I jokingly guessed the ending, I was sadly let down when I was correct. Afterwards, I read that the ending was supposed to be a great twist. Glad I didn’t guess _The Sixth Sense_, but I can’t watch that again, either. Two viewings only; one to learn the twist ending, another to look for consistency. Now it’s just a film about a kid who sees dead people. Decent-to-good acting, but no payoff anymore.

Eh, I got that beat. I thought the first _Spiderman_ was incredibly boring. Tobey McGuire simply cannot act AT ALL. I know that’s an expression that gets bandied about all the time, but it’s really appropriate here. Unless, I suppose, the director said, “Now Tobey, in this scene, you’re going to stand there and be bland and boring. Then, in the next scene, you’re going to do your lines like you’re struggling with some inner demon. For motivation, pretend that you’ve lost your keys. Wait, that’s got too much gravitas. Instead, pretend that you’ve just dropped your keys, and you have to bend down and pick them up. Harness the melancholy of such a heartrending scene and give it to me when we roll camera. ACTION!”

I can’t stand Tom Cruise. He’s just playing the same character in every single movie and getting away with it b/c people think he’s cute!

In Music : Pink Floyd. Enya. Enigma. Rush. Lynyrd Skynyrd. The latter two are enough to make me instantly move to change the radio station. ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ annoys me beyond the capacity for words. And there’s that guy… John Meyer? Very mellow, sappy songs? Don’t like him, either.

In TV: Babylon Five. I was also lukewarm on the X-Files, but Bab Five left me cold.

Yeah, I know, I know. It probably didn’t help that I’d already read the book, and so the big reveal was a non-surprise. I’ll be seeing it again pretty soon; maybe I’ll have a different opinion the second time.

**Sir Prize** : I actually liked “Gattaca”. I was fully prepared not to, because I don’t really like Uma Thurman, and I’m no big fan of Ethan Hawke, but I liked it.

Ah yes, add _E.T._ to my list. And I saw it as a young adult (mid-twenties). The girl that I saw it with just could not understand how I could **not** like that movie. It was so warm and uplifting and heart-rending! I thought it was just dumb.

A couple of others I haven’t seen yet:

Raising Arizona

A Fish Called Wanda (I love Monty Python, by the way, so it’s not that I “don’t get” the humor in this movie, it’s that there isn’t any humor to get.)

Friends

This one will surely get me called “sacrilegious”:
The episode of _Buffy the Vampire Slayer_ where her mom dies. Omigod how bad!! Probably the single worst episode of any TV series I’ve ever seen! Cloying, insipid, manipulative in the extreme, the writing totally obvious. That so many fans of the show thought that episode was so great that they wanted it nominated for an Emmy will remain one of the most baffling mysteries of my day. (Now the episode of _Buffy_ that featured the floating guys that stole everyone’s voice, **that** was an exceptionally good episode, very inventive and well-done.)

For me it’s both. My inner mom is constantly disapproving, but I’m also cracking up. It’s worse with South Park. Adam Sandler films and things like Dumb and Dumber cross a line for me that leaves them just not funny. I can happily say I hate them.

Is there a word related to “ashamed to be enjoying this”?

I’m sorta with y’all on the **Shrek** films. My wife’s dad’s family is MAD for 'em, which is totally bizarre. I found them mildly amusing, inappropriate for young children, and forgettable.

To all the above, I add **Heat**. Yes, the DeNiro-Pacino teamup. Lord, I hated that movie, and the fact that so many people rave about it makes it even worse. It sucked, it sucked, it sucked.

I agree with you. I don’t really hate the episode, but I certainly would never choose to watch it again. I’m glad Joss can work out his issues, but I don’t see why I have to watch it.

**Star Wars**. I particularly hate Phantom and Clones, but I pretty much don’t like the other three movies either. I will see episode 3 in the theater. I will hate myself for it. I will never, ever, ever understand the appeal of those awful movies.

I love Pixar movies, but detest Dreamwork’s computer animated movies. I don’t know, there’s just something about them that seems to try to hard that ends up being a lot of fart jokes and pathetic pop culture references as if they’re trying to be hip (i.e. Shrek, Shark Tales).

**Roadfood.**

Thank you.

It seems everyone I know thinks Friends was the greatest show on television EVER. It’s not. It’s not even remotely funny. It’s the same damn joke, worn thin over 9 or 10 years. Why on earth do we need two dumbass airheads? Did the whole “Hehe, these guys are geeks! Hehe, these girls are hot!” thing really remain funny? Now, I’ll admit I haven’t watched a full episode since Season 2 or so, so maybe it improved a great deal after that and I missed 8 seasons of great television. But I doubt it.

Add Shrek to my list as well. Boring, not terribly funny, full of pop culture jokes that were overdone by the time the movies hit the theatre, and just sad by the time they came out on video. Bleh.

Also, the voice acting grates on me. Using really well-known voices without any kind of attempt to dress them up to just pulls me away from whatever world they’re trying to create. It distracts me that the wooden toy sounds exactly like Tom Hanks, or that the fish sounds like Albert Brooks. For some reason it doesn’t bother me when they do it in 2D animation (i.e., Albert Brooks as Hank Scorpio = hilarious).
