Order any checks lately?

I think that’s it. Getting all banks in the US to agree on anything is very difficult. Note that the best (IMO) current system for transfers, Zelle, was set up by a specific consortium of banks, and is not used by every bank.

That’s not even universal in American banking - the last few times I set up a direct deposit I didn’t need to provide a voided check, just the routing and account numbers.

I, too, am going “bwuh?”

For a certain category of Americans that’s not a bug, it’s a feature.

The latest news is that Target is joining Aldi and Whole Foods in not accepting checks.

Only 1% of consumers prefer to use checks when making in-store purchases like at retail stores or restaurants, according to a 2023 North America payment insights study by Javelin Strategy & Research.

I write a check once a month to pay my rent. The last time I used a check for anything else was to buy some groceries at work when I had lost my debit card and didn’t have time to go to a Wells Fargo ATM where I can withdraw money using my phone. Since then I’ve set up my debit card on Samsung Pay so I don’t even need to have it with me as long as the business accepts phone pay.

Just read that check usage is so low that the Treasury Dept downsized to only 1 location for clearing them

??

I thought the Federal Reserve was responsible for clearing checks.

Yep, just did.

We write one a month for the rent. That’s it.

my bad, misread/misremembered

I use em. Just got a bunch of free ones from Wells since they discontinued my old plan and set me up with a new one. Free, so I got as many as I could, figuring it would be the last time ever. Got National Parks. I like them.

I last wrote a cheque about 18 years ago. These days any UK businesses that accept them will be thin on the ground. I received a tax refund cheque about 3 years ago but that has gone online now.
