I’m going to assume then, at least in my case, it’s a joke that just didn’t land. ---

I don’t think the cholesterol angle is important to the gag. Belkar heard that vampires hate steaks, so he cooked some steaks. It’s not really that much of a leap. They also hate garlic, right? Apparently, they’ve got all sorts of food-related allergies. Hardly the weirdest thing Belkar’s ever killed. ---

I think it’s clear that Belkar thought the cook was calling him a homophobe and was insulted by this. Belkar would never hate somebody for being gay; he hates all people equally without regard for their sexual orientation. ---

So, given that the Mechane can fly a bit higher than most airships, doesn’t that imply that there are probably some passes accessible to her that aren’t accessible to most other ships? Some less well-charted ones? That seems like it’d be highly desirable for multiple reasons. ---
