But then why include the compulsion in the first place? The usual way to do it would be to have something that works just fine in the main story, but also functions as a callback for those in the know. But I admit I’m not sure how that could be accomplished in this case. ---

So he could show Xykon doing that renewal at some point. ---

Cool. They’re following a rule I just learned about: Shoot your Monks. A good DM will deliberately play up to their character’s strengths. If someone goes to the trouble to add that skill, then it feels awesome to let them use it. Of course, in this case it’s also just a narrative rule (Chekhov’s gun). Roy really has learned a lot from Elan. ---
