Ordering eyeglasses question

When specifying glasses for my wife online I notice that when I check the “Progressive bifocal” box a number of eyeglass styles are not available. I can’t see any distinguishing features about them. So what is the reason some do not work?

I have been told that certain frames are too small to allow for the progressive lenses I need - so it is probably related to the size.

I have progressive lenses, and to make it more complicated, a prism in one lens. I’ve had smaller frames and never been quite happy with them. Larger frames have always worked better for me.

I broke my glasses with progressive lenses. They had titanium frames that broke in half (I Looked over my balcony and they fell 3 floors onto concrete) and couldn’t be repaired while I waited for a new pair. The optometrist only had a pair of Ray-Ban frames that would accommodate the lenses due to, as you say, the size of them.

I don’t know - I have progressive lenses, and my glasses are pretty small: each lens is roughly 5 cm by 4 cm.

There are certain styles that do not have enough vertical depth to allow the progressive power to change from your distance Rx to the higher plus power needed for reading up close. Also some designs place the bridge or nosepads very low in the space between the lenses so that much of the vertical dimension is above the pupil. There was a time prior to today’s digital lenses that precluded large sized lenses because the available lens blanks were to small of diameter to cut out the shape of the frame. That is less of an issue today. Good luck with your new RX. BTW if you have choices of material you will get clearer vision form lenses of a high index ( 1.67) or else CR -39 than with polycarbonate. Poly is best for car headlights but not RX lenses. (51 years in optics here)
