The only Pit thread with my name on it is exactly like this one! I agree that those flags at the bottom of the post are terrible. ---

I think they can be useful (i.e. informing a poster of it, or informing other posters that someone has been pitted for that post so they don’t waste time getting angry). But it would be nice to be able to turn them off if they go to the Pit. Heck, I wouldn’t mind just turning them off on my posts, and making sure I never get notified of them. I’ll see any Pit thread on my own time, when I’m emotionally ready to handle them. ---

What makes you think the subject wants to be informed? You can assassinate someone’s character on your own time, without needing them there to suffer it. ---

I didn’t say they always need to know, as you can tell by the rest of my post, where I said I’d rather not be told. I said they may wish to be informed. A lot of people would like to be able to defend themselves.\* When I first got here, it was considered a common courtesy to post “Let’s take this to the Pit.” Now that’s done automatically as long as you link the post. The Pit isn’t supposed to be about “character assassination.” It’s a place to be able to express your anger at something a poster said, without disrupting the original thread. Well, that and a place to rant about stuff outside the board. Character assassination, as I understand the term, is a form of lying—saying someone did something they didn’t. I’ve seen that occasionally, but someone nearly always pops in to point out the lie. Pit threads do backfire somewhat frequently, where everyone says the OP is the real asshole. While I rarely start whole Pit threads, I’ve gotten told off for posts in the Troll thread. \*Also, while it’s not super common, people have wound up getting moderated due to things mentioned in the Pit, so you might want to be able to defend yourself before that happens. Though simply avoiding breaking the rules is easier. ---

This isn’t really an MPSIMS discussion since any disagreement with the OP would by necessity involve an accusation of trolling outside of the Pit. Let’s just close this before someone decides to drag the thread into Pit territory. ---
