Borg were a bunch of gear heads that became increasingly mechanized to the point where they lost all mobility. This problem was solved when they ran afoul of the the Warners, who animated them in ways previously unknown.

I seem to recall an episode in TNG where Q throws the enterprise into the [sym]D[/sym] quadrant and right in front of a Borg Cube. Memory is hazy, but it was something of a “this is what is in store for you” lesson from Q. This made me suspect that the Borg were a creation of the Q, but I’m not enough of a Star Trek weenie to see flaws in this idea.
