I don’t know how similar it is, really, but for some reason the first song that popped into my head was Imogen Heap’s “Hide and Seek”. Maybe it’s the bit that starts around 2’52".

That’s the thing. Orinoco Flow has the New Age vibe going on, but I generally don’t care for New Age music. It’s hard to explain, especially on a message board and before coffee. I’m not looking for similar ‘songs that sound like’ songs, but for songs that invoke a certain ‘resonance’ in me. I’m not sure how to explain that.

Orinoco Flow has a very punctuated rhythm, both instrumentally and vocally. That and the harmonies induce a pleasant reaction in spite of the ‘New Age-iness’ of it. I’ve always been drawn to water. The song makes me think of the rivers and bodies of water, where they are in the world, how they look, the cultures surrounding them, etc.

Are you a fan of Laurie Anderson at all? Strange Angels is probably her most musically accessible work; to my ear it verges into the same lushly-instrumented/rhythmically-focused vibe as Orinoco Flow. And some of her earlier work (especially from Home of the Brave) gets my mind to pondering things it does not often ponder.

The thing is, I’m not looking at a genre. It’s more of a ‘feeling’ thing. It’s hard to describe. I’m thinking maybe When I Grow Up by Michelle Shocked might go on the playlist. It’s the rhythm.

So after my last post Dropkick Murphys and Floggin Molly played. Men at Work’s Down Under just finished. Strangely, I get a similar pleasure out of that song that I do from Orinoco Flow.

I’ll have to check the links after I get home, where I can play what I want and the connection is faster.
