[Ornette Coleman](http://www.npr.org/sections/ablogsupreme/2015/06/11/413630335/ornette-coleman-jazz-iconoclast-dies-at-85) died today. He was really important to me, a lot of the music I love springs directly and indirectly from his music. I didn’t know he was from Fort Worth until now, so he’s another I dissed by omission in my Texas musicians thread. Sorry about that, sir. See ya man, I’ll miss ya. ---

Shit. I admit I don’t play his records very often – call me a Moldy Fig if you must – but he was one of the great innovators… With Chris Lee, that makes two deaths today of people I cared about. Gonna be another one before midnight. ---

Sorry to see him go. Even though free jazz has never been something I could appreciate, I respect the effort he made to add to the jazz genre. ---

Amazingly, he won the Pulitzer Prize for an album from 2006, when he was 76! That’s awesome. ---

While I appreciate that they were both forward-looking and taking jazz in new directions, I would rather listen to a guy like Ben Webster just because of that fat rich tenor tone he got. Sonny Rollins. There’s a guy who’s the equal of Coleman and Coltrane as a pioneer. AND he has beautiful tone. Sonny Rollins isn’t ever going to die, because I won’t let him. ---

I respect his spirit and innovation a lot more than I liked his music; but damn, I really respected him. Thanks Ornette.
