This is one of 4 Oscar Madness showdowns running, with this one having films never nominated for an Oscar in any category square off against each other in four different time periods. All seeds and line-ups determined by the user poll data from the IMDB. Only feature-length fiction films were under consideration, and a director is limited to one film in each era.

Please make your answers legible. The deadline is Wed. July 2 at 9am PST.

Oh wow, and here’s where the pain really comes. Going against Kong & the Marx Brothers, the Dreyer, Gance and Tourneur–and that’s just in the first grouping! Ouch. ☹ But that still leaves plenty of brilliant silent films, and the incredible Hawks & Lubitsch as well.

Things don’t get any easier, jettisoning the (gulp) Mizoguchi, Kurosawa, Welles, and Tarkovsky right off the bat. But the other films are worth it, especially the amazing _Sweet Smell_ and the awesome _Hunter_.

Phew! An easy round, though I’ll admit to probably preferring _The Thing_ by a nose, but since I’m sure it’s going to win, I can escape without having to vote against Tarkovsky twice.

And that final round shows how looney the IMDB can be sometimes. _The Professional_? _Snatch_?!? Yikes. Still, if you’ve never seen _Gypsies_, it is one of the most beautiful and moving films from that period (and it’s not even Kusturica’s best!).
(although I predict you are gonna get flamed to death for not calling it Leon (even though The Professional is a way better movie title), and I’m going to get flamed for not typing the accent mark)
I don’t know anybody in the US who refers to the movie as _Leon_. They do in Europe, of course (even the UK), but if I put the original title in the thread (even with the director annotation), I’d be willing to bet 80% of the people who’d even seen the film wouldn’t know what movie I was talking about.

Just 20 hours left!
