Other people's laundry...

Regarding Internet-viewable laundry:

They’re already on it.

Exactly.
side note: I have always owned a washer and dryer. The only time I use a public laundry facility is when I am washing our king sized comforter. I wait with it. I spent way to much money on it to leave it alone.

I expect my laundry to just get piled up somewhere if I’m not back to move it… wrinkly clothes are the price I expect to pay. I’d probably feel a bit guilty if they were folded–not only had I left things in their way; they’d folded them, too!

I own a washer/dryer now, but way back when you could count me in the group that would rather not have strangers touching my clothes. For one, I don’t know you, you may not have washed your hands after you used the restroom or something (neurotic? not me!). Then, you could drop my stuff on the dirty floor and I don’t like to use underpants or face towels or whatever that have been dropped on a filthy floor.

Folding my things would be the worst you could do, though. Not only has the touching been intensified, but you’d fold my things all wrong. The horror! Good news is that I wouldn’t be upset with you if you did it. My fault for being late.

Only if you happened to do your laundry exactly when I did, and if my schedule was tight and I couldn’t afford to wait (usually I jst wait), and if none of the dryers were available, and if I wasn’t hanging my clothes that day (I hang darks).

Hit and miss there Zebra. I think you’d be disappointed. :stuck_out_tongue:

I agree with Lel - touching the laundry of other people is just disgusting, no matter how “clean” the clothes are coming out of the washer or dryer.

So I’ll wait before moving someone elses load, and would prefer my clothes not to be touched either, unless I inadvertantly leave them in the washer/dryer way too long, then I understand if someone moves them. I hope that they would not fold them. That is just wrong.

I’d definitely prefer them not to be folded. It’s been a while sine I used a laundromat, but being late to get my clothing and inconveniencing someone else was embarassing enough, and then to know that they went to all the trouble of folding my clothes… I’d feel even more guilty, knowing someone else did my work, and it was my fault for being late.

I don’t understand this position AT ALL. Clean clothes are disgusting? For you or them? It’s just cotton.

Does this come from the same place as compulsive disinfecting?

Let me know when you go into business. Also, if you’re going to intelligently design a laundromat, stock it with at least 1 and half times the number of dryers as washers. After all, drying takes longer anyways, AND some people like to split loads so they dry faster.

I am, at this moment, only 75% sure I know where my iron is - I’m altogether unsure whether it works. I don’t iron stuff. So, you wouldn’t be saving a person like me ironing. Neither way would bother me, if you have an overwhelming urge to fold my clothes, I’m not going to stop you. If you simply want to put your own clothes in the dryer, I appreciate mine being put on the table or on top of the dryer (as opposed to on the floor.) That’s pretty much it.

I tend to put others’ clothes on the table. Without folding.

At least you wait until the clothes are DRY before taking them out. That I don’t mind.

It’s when I come down to get my clothes from the dryer (on time) and I find them sitting on top of the dryer, soaking wet, and someone elses clothes inside that ticks me off.

Personally I also don’t care if you fold or not, I don’t care about wrinkles and anything of mine that is wrinkle-prone is hung to dry because it would probably shrink in a dryer anyway. I also don’t own a iron so I don’t have much that is really going to wrinkle (one or two shirts and only one pair of pants). As long as all my clothing is there, I’m happy.

In my old apartment building I know a bunch of my underwear went missing whenever I did a wash. I moved in with a few weeks worth and by the time I moved out all the older underwear I had was down to less than a weeks worth, I had to buy more. In the new place though people will just dump soaking wet clothes on top of the dryer to put theirs in.

I was kind of wondering that myself.

I mean, I understand the yuck factor of a hamper full of some stranger’s dirty laundry, or a used face cloth, but cleanclothes? Downey fresh from the hot dryer?

Finding other people’s clothes “sickening” seems a touch extreme. What do you do when you visit someone and stay for a bit? Bring your own pillow case and washcloth?

I would be deeply ashamed if a stranger folded my clothes because I was irresponsible about getting to the dryer on time.

In the apartment complex I used to live in, we all left our baskets on top of the dryers. I usually gave the previous dryer user about 20 minutes after their load was done, and if they hadn’t returned I put them into their basket without folding them.

A funny aside: We used to put stuff we wished to give away in the laundry room. I once put a Christmas tree stand in there with a sign that said, “Free, Take Me!” A while later the stand was gone, but my sign had been stuck to a pair of abandoned panties.

No, actually I’m a severe slob. To me, it’s disgusting in the sense that it’s more an invasion of privacy than a cleanliness issue.

In my complex if you leave your clothes in the dryer often someone will knock on your door and let you know they are done, which is a rare instance in my case. I guess small apartment life is a good thing. I can usually identify baskets to their owners here.

I’d prefer people not to touch my clothes so I try to get back on time. If there are clothes in the dryer when I need it, I’ll leave mine in the washer a good while. It’s not that they are disgusting so much as I was brought up being told to keep your hands off other people’s things and I guess it stuck with me.

I will put someone’s wet clothes in the dryer and pay for it just so I don’t have to wait for the washer. I don’t fold their dry clothes, but I have no problem with someone folding mine.

I’m familiar with my neighbors, so I guess I’m not that worried about their filth level or their cooties getting on my stuff. haha.

I’d prefer it if you just left 'em in a pile, thanks. You’re not my butler, you’re not obliged to fold my clothes for me. I don’t have an iron, and if I can’t manage my time well enough to get down to the dryer when the load’s about done, I deserve wrinkly shirts and pants.

From the other end of the deal, I judge by the temperature. If it’s still got that “ahhh, warm laundry!” feel to it, it stays. If it’s room temperature - off to the side table it goes. No folding. I’m not your dang butler, I’m not obliged to fold your clothes for you.

Our dryer just broke, so this is now an issue for us – at least, it is until we find another cheapo used dryer to replace it.

I wouldn’t mind so much someone taking my clothes out and putting them in a pile, but it’d kinda freak me out if someone folded my clothes for me. My own wife doesn’t fold my laundry, nor do I fold hers; it’s just something you take care of yourself.

And if you find it disgusting to have someone else touch your clothes, I’d think that’s your problem, not theirs; you’re perfectly free to hover by the dryer to keep someone else from following normal laundromat protocol.

DO NOT ever do this! I have had the unfortunate experience of having clothing ruined because it was put into the dryer by a “helpful” person. I have a lot of clothing that can be machine washed but must be laid flat or hung to dry. Even if the label says that the item can be tumble dried, that doesn’t mean it’s what I want. I hang dry all of my pajamas regardless of the label instructions because otherwise they will shrink and become useless to me.

To answer the OP, I prefer that you have as little contact with my clothing as possible. If you need the washer, remove my clothing and leave it in a wet pile on top of the dryer or on a table. If you need the dryer, just pull the clothing out and pile it. You don’t know what I fold, what I hang, or how I like my clothes folded.

Well, I’d find the folding more irksome. I guess I’m more territorial with my laundry…don’t touch my stuff or touch it the least you can.

As an addendum: I have been delayed in getting to communal washing machines before and had my laundry taken from a dryer (never a washer tho). Fine, my bad. * However*, I know the machines and times of the wash and dry cycles. One time I was there literally three minutes after the dryer would have stopped to find my clothes dumped in a random basket, still damp.

Needless to say that rang my bell so I just returned the favor by opening the dryer to stop the tumbling/drying and then shut it, switched to air and left it unstarted to burn the timer off. If I am delayed now by less than 10 minutes and someone touches my stuff…that has become SOP.

Later…
