Our beloved cat Binx, 13 days away from his 13th birthday, passed to the Great Beyond today. He was in renal failure and we took him to the emergency vet, where we euthanized him and he passed surrounded by his people. ---

So sorry to hear this. He still should have had many years left. Very sad. I do not know if losing a beloved pet is the worst thing ever but it is up near the top of the list for most people. Hang on to those fond memories of him. ---

My sister @EllieNeo called him her “grumpy old man”, and he didn’t like to be touched very much. But he’d always lean into snoot boops. He was the most food-motivated cat we’ve ever had, and he loved the chicken broth the doctor recommended for him. He liked to sleep on Ellie’s hip and on my hip. I sleep on the couch on my side, but I don’t usually start that way. He would patiently allow me to move from my back to my side without wandering off as if I’d insulted his ancestors. He was a big sweetheart, and we’ll miss him very much. ---

When we got out to the car, the song “Beauty and the Beast” from the live-action version was playing on the SiriusXM. It’s the same song that played when Ellie’s boyfriend’s cat Pacha died a couple years ago, and in fact the two of them just commemorated that occasion by watching the movie together. Ellie’s boyfriend said it was Pacha welcoming Binx to the afterlife and telling him it was going to be okay. Why haven’t I cried? I loved him, and Ellie cried a lot, but I haven’t. ---

Grief manifests in weird ways. I would not read too much in to it. Maybe because you had to make the hard choice to euthanize Binx you had to protect yourself from the consequences of that choice. Just a WAG…I really do not know. ETA: And making that choice was the most loving thing you could have done for him as difficult as it was. ---

Here are some pictures of our sweet boy. Ellie got him from someone who was giving kittens away at kind of a skeevy tattoo parlor. She found out after the fact that he was too young to be taken from his mother - only 4 weeks old. His entire life, he had an issue with grooming himself. Here he is at 4 weeks old.
