We rescued him in 2007, and he wasn’t a puppy. He outlasted three other dogs. We thought he was on his last legs 3 years ago, but he soldiered on. When he was young, he was pretty athletic: [![Imgur](https://i.imgur.com/6UaYIW4.jpeg "imgur.com") ](https://imgur.com/6UaYIW4) ---

Deepest sympathies, @beowulff . Even when they’re old and creaky, it hits hard. I still tear up over our Max, and he died in May. They leave a big hole. ---

My condolences. Losing pets is hard. I remember all 7 dogs I’ve loved and lost, and our current dog is age 14 so there’s more grief ahead. Thankfully they’re worth the heartbreak, but damn it hurts. ---

The sheer, unmitigated joy expressed by Andy in the photo you shared tells us all we need to know about the wonderful life you shared together. Well done to you for giving Andy an enviable life. The grief is nearly overwhelming, but when it abates, you will always have these precious memories of your beloved pup. My best to you in a really tough time. ---

Thanks for the thoughts, everyone. My wife and I took a break and went out to lunch today. When we got home, I looked on my calendar, and noticed that I had missed a Vet appointment for one of our other dogs. I called them and actually got to use the excuse that, well, our dog died. 🙁 (We re-scheduled for later in the day).
