It has the ability to make the perfect weapon (a disease targeted to a specific person or group), and I can’t see the governments of the worlds sitting idly by and waiting to see who figures it out first. When these issues explode into our world, it will be nice to have been discussing them for a while, so that we can make some educated and informed decisions about how best to use these new technologies as they arise. With ethics, empathy, intelligence and a little discussion, hopefully we can make a world for our children (and hopefully ourselves) that eliminates a good deal of suffering, and maybe someday death. Hopefully, they look back on this time 100 years from now as the end of the dark ages and the beginning of a golden age. If this hope makes me a nut job, so be it. At least I’m an optimistic nut job. Evolution may have multiple meanings, but you can’t say it means one thing, then go say that has Darwinian implications because the word you chose was ‘evolution.’ What you never made clear in your thread, as I read it, was the understanding that changing yourself will not naturally be passed on to your offspring. That’s the key to evolution, of course, in the Darwinian sense. FTR, I don’t think you’re a total dipstick. I don’t even know how to diagnose one. ---

Bup: I wasn’t speaking in a Darwinian sense. I was speaking of the movement of matter from simple to complex (and aware) forms. A process started billions of years ago that will continue for billions more. I was not speaking of strictly biological evolution. But the theory of biological evolution is definately a part of the ultimate evolution of everything (which I guess includes what you would call abiological evolution). There is a definition for the word evolution that fits this usage. 🙂 DaLovin’Dj ---

I got a nut job. They were too scrawy and flabby and dangly. So I had my urologist throw in some iron and firm those babies up. Now my nuts are large and perky with ample cleavage. ---

Allow me to speak as someone who has moderated a while, as someone who is confronted with the iceberg of prick behavior that most of you see only the tip of. 1. When confronted with the simultaneous appearance of several wingnuts, it is easy to suddenly become sensitive to every bizarre quirk that some new posters have. As a result, one becomes prone to viewing a minor cluster of oddballs as a major influx of idiocy. 2. Any legitimate newbie will undergo some kind of equilibration period after joining. Maybe they are used to the environment of other MBs, maybe this is their first exposure to a discussion board with a high intellectual standard. Either way, a true dipstick will most likely display a consistant pattern of schmuckery over time. 3. Dogpiling a new poster can result in that poster staunchly defending his maligned quirks. Quirks that may not even be a major part of that poster’s persona under less hostile circumstances. That isn’t to say that I’m a tremendous fan of everyone who have been dubbed Dipsticks in this thread. And I’m not suggesting that newbies unilaterally be immune from flaming. But this thread is being closed to allow all of you to cool off a bit. The newbies who are merely misunderstood will find their groove and will go on to be superb posters. The newbies who are clueless dolts will continue to act like jerks and they’ll be relegated to the realm of Soon Forgotten Banned Posters. Like whats-his-name.
