I was crying at the end of this episode when Jamie rides away (this is episode 4). This is definitely one of the better ones in the series. I liked the way they portrayed Geneva, she seems like a girl with spirit.

Sad news…episode 5 airs on 10/8, then THEY SKIP A WEEK and we don’t get the Print Shop until Oct 22! How dare they!!!

Agreed. I didn’t like Geneva at first but the “after” scene in the bedroom…god, my heart ached for both of them for different reasons. Then when she emerged from the carriage obviously pregnant, I turned to my husband and said, “This does not surprise me.” Willie’s existence alone means there’s another offshoot for another series down the line." (I loved the Willie/Jamie scenes too).
The pub thing…I know in Australia there used to be (any maybe still is) a “lounge” area attached to many pubs where women and those who want a quieter setting can drink. Pub culture has always been very much a male bastion. It’s changed now, but there were quite a few challenging years there as attitudes shifted.
Frank broke my heart. He reluctantly didn’t care anymore if Claire knew. I think the scene where his paramour shows up at the door wasn’t deliberate --didn’t he suggest earlier that the group head for the restaurant early? If they had, Claire never would’ve laid eyes on her.

Well, it was rather rude to 1)Not go to the restaurant to celebrate Claire’s graduation from medical school and 2)Have the mistress come to the house to pick him up with such a narrow window. I mean, even if the reservation was at six everyone was still at the house. As Claire said, on this day of all days.

We have the Starz subscription through amazon prime (it’s an extra 8 bucks a month or so I think) and all the episodes show as “Available through your Starz subscription”).
You should only have to pay once (a month) for everything.

I must have misinterpreted it I didn’t see it as much as the mistress coming to pick him up as I did him not being able to get away from the party to see her, then her knocking on the door looking for him.
The scene added yet another layer of death to their marriage.

Later, Frank told Claire that Sandy/Candy was coming to pick him up because Claire was taking the car. So he had made plans with another woman on his wife’s graduation day. Did you see the death glare Joe gave him? Nobody but nobody messes with Lady Jane when Dr. Joe is in the house.

Great ending, perfect place to leave off. I half-expected that she would open the door to the print shop and go in and that they would cut to black there.
I am disappointed we have to wait two weeks for the next episode. Boo.

Agreed. When she put her hand on the print shop door, my wife and I said, “Roll credits!” Then when he called “Is that you, Geordie?”, we said, “Roll credits!” And finally when she looked down and saw him, we said, “Surely they’re going to roll credits _now_.”
Glad we got to at least see his reaction shot.

I enjoy the way the writers have been able to play with the expectations of the book readers while keeping the story completely accessible to screen-only fans as well.

This is going to sound awful but I chuckled at Jamie’s reaction. It was utterly perfect.
Did anybody else feel that this episode moved rather slowly? I know Claire had to have time to come to the realization that she had to return, but it seemed so…glacial.
Am I the only one who gets a “wrong casting” vibe from the actor playing Bree? She seems very wooden and I don’t enjoy her scenes because of it. I’m thinking as Jamie’s daughter an actor could do a lot with that part, even in subtle ways, to add even more tension to their mother/daughter relationship. All I’m getting is “recite my lines in this way” with no feeling behind them. Was she written like this in the books?

To me it was like the ending of MOBY. Everyone is where they’re supposed to be, so I can be content and wait. Kudoes for not ending it when the bell jingled. Now we can catch our breath because all hell is going to break loose (plus we get more sexy sex again.)
Anyone jump up and punch the ceiling when they saw the skeleton on Dr. Joe’s desk? Wooohoooo!
“Skinny white broad with too much hair and a great ass.” Heh. Gonna miss me some Dr. Joe.
Roger couldn’t be any more sweeter, and I’m glad they’re setting up Bree’s new major She goes into mechanical engineering.
Sigh…I love this show. I still get chills that they adapted my favorite book. Squeeee!!!

Ah. Ok, I can understand that. If that’s the reason, it makes me think of all the other actors around who can do American accents without a second thought. Discovering somebody who was cast without mastering makes her, to me, somewhat uncomfortable to watch. But hey, I give her kudos!

Bliss. I got what I wanted – that reunion scene. I was thinking, _usually in stories like this, it’s the man who goes looking for the long lost One True Love and when the woman spots him, she faints. They won’t do that because Jamie is such a strong, masculine Highlander – he won’t faint like a chick._ Heh.
Anyway, I don’t even care about the next episode. That’s just going to be 45 minutes of sex scene and maybe some bits of plot-moving dialogue here and there. The important part – to me – was the last five minutes of this episode. It was my favorite scene in the TV series and my fave scene in the book, hands down.

Yep, I also expected the episode to end with Claire’s hand on the door to the print shop, so I was delighted that we got to see the first few moments of the reunion. That’s one of my favorite scenes from the books, probably like many readers. I imagine the writers felt they couldn’t change it too much, or we’d all revolt. Heh.
Do any of you read the various recaps? I especially like those in the New York Times and Go Fug Yourself.

Re: The casting of Bree - no, you’re not the only one to think that Sophie Skelton isn’t hitting in the same league with Cait, Sam, or Tobias. (Or the sublime Graham McTavish.) Mrs. SMV, who’s an _Outlander_ fangirl of many years standing, says that the blogosphere is generally discontented. Especially as in the novels, Bree is a fierce, forceful, somewhat larger-than-life character, much like her father. Literally large - she’s tall and strong and has Jamie’s (and Jenny’s) temper.
Rose Leslie would have made a fantastic Brianna - she’s got the red hair, the badassery, and, the cherry on the sundae, she’s a real-life Fraser - a direct descendant of the Lord Lovat who was Jamie’s chief. Maybe she just can’t do an American accent.
