I wonder if the owl saw the canary through the glass doors? Owls have excellent eyesight at night.

Looks like a screech owl. I’ve seen them in close proximity to houses before, but not inside.

Despite what the “expert” may have stated in the article, I’m going to let you in on a handy protip:
When you leave open doors for extended periods of time (like all night), the inside of your domicile is not inside. You just made your inside outside. Wildlife happens outside. Or your living room. Your choice.
Anyone living in a place that has a lot of bugs knows this.

I don’t see a description of the injuries to the canaries so I think it much more likely the owl just scared it to death and did not actually open the doors, kill one of the birds and then put its body back in the cage instead of eating it which would have been its movtivation for entering the apartment in the first place.

I believe owls are wonderful birds! My favorites are the little burrowing owl. However, all owls are predators, just as cats are predators but I love cats too.😃

Years ago I read in the Washington Post about a large owl which flew into a house. The article said that when the animal control officers arrived, they found “two small dogs cowering” in a corner of the room, as far as they could get from the bird.

I can’t even begin to calculate the monetary losses at the talons of those evil bastards! And what’s worse is we seem to have some kind of “Felix Unger” owls, who will only eat the craws out of the chickens, leaving heads and bodies behind.
