Since this has been brought up a couple of times, let’s just set the record straight. So far as I’m aware it is the only instance of explosives deliberately killing students in a U.S. school. It was in 1927; the perpetrator was not a student, he was 55 years old; he brought the explosives to the school in a truck, not a backpack.

And regarding the Bath School bombing, the Wikipedia article says, “In November 1926, he drove to Lansing and bought two boxes of dynamite at a sporting goods store. Dynamite was also commonly used on farms, so his purchase of small amounts of explosives at different stores and on different dates did not raise any suspicions.”

We’ve since made it considerably harder to acquire dynamite but have made it easier to acquire deadlier guns.

_Sigh._ One more time. There was some question upthread as to whether the school had the legal authority to search. When I found that the DA said the school did have the legal authority, I posted that to answer the question. WHEN the DA was asked is beside that particular point.

Last night I texted with the (overworked) guidance counselor at the school where I taught, a woman with many years’ experience. She’s aware of the case–in fact, she has young relatives who attend Oxford HS–and has read about the notes and drawings. I asked if she would have seen the notes and drawings as a threat to other students as well as Crumbley. Here’s her response:

> By all means. We would have law enforcement as well as on-call mental health worker and likely involve DFS. Oxford is K-12 with thousands of kids. No excuse.

You may say she’s saying all this after the fact, but this is the protocol followed at her school. She’s certainly had much more experience dealing with troubled kids and potential school shooters than most of those posting here.

For what it’s worth, MY super experienced guidance counselor doesn’t think we would have called the police or searched the bag.

ETA: though the exact details of the screening g they gave the kid would make a big difference.

Yes, absolutely. We could likely save at least 10000 lives a year if we repealed the 2nd. Maybe 20000.

788,000 Americans have died from Covid. Experts say about 2/3rd of those were preventable so let’s say 500000, most of whom died due to lies spread by social media, conservative talk radio, Fox News and a certain ex-president. Making laws that stop the spread of such lies are prevented by the 1st Ad.

How many persons sacrificed to the cult of the 1st amendment is an acceptable number? Looks like more than half a million.

If we go rid of several other amendments we could stop many killers from getting away with their crimes. That pesky Bill of Rights really gets in the way sometimes, doesn’t it?

Maybe we should scrap the whole thing?

Easier? So many gun control laws passed since then, back then you could buy Tommy guns at hardware stores or through the mail, with no questions asked.

Yes, it is. But you can make many explosives with OTC chemicals. There are books and webpages showing you how.

And yet it’s been almost 100 years since we’ve had someone use explosives at a school, but guns are used practically every other week

You are right, an absolutist interpretation of the first amendment that allows things like unchecked hate speech or COVID lies is incredibly destructive. Just like an unchecked interpretation of the second amendment that conveniently pretends half the text doesn’t exist.

I shudder to think about the price we will soon be paying for stuff like Tucker Carlson’s piece of Nazi propaganda, Patriot Purge. It will make Jan 6 look like a walk in the park.

There are many Checks on the 2nd. Note that the actions for this shooting were pretty much all illegal. Even Heller listed many checks on the 2nd.

This post is on topic, but can we get back to the OP, please, and not turn this into another gun control debate?

2005? You mean the bombing of the UNIVERSITY of Oklahoma? Generally school shootings don’t refer to higher education, but fine, let’s grant you that one. That bombing killed one person… the bomber.

Thank God he didn’t have a gun; he might have hurt someone!

I’ll grant you, I did find a case from 1959. So, fine, almost 70 years, not 100.

There are no such people. Can we get back to the Oxford shooting?

That’s funny, but thankfully the scroll wheel on my mouse works so I can easily find such people in this very thread, insisting that there’s no gun problem in America.

You seem to think that you’re making a point, but you’re ignoring one distinct difference. The people who die because they believe the lies about covid make a choice. They choose to believe the lies and to disregard the science. The people who die from gun violence never had a choice.

Yes, different schools operate in different ways. I’m glad mine operates the way it does.
