The Astra was a pub in Bondi ( Sydney) in the 70s and 80s . It was a law unto it own . It went 3 floors up and there was bands every night. All the great Australian bands played there . Rock n roll was alive and well back then . The pub was filled with a large contingent of Māoris and other South Pacific nationals as well as Caucasian Australian drug fiends The drugs back then were barbiturates( reds, tuinal and Mandrax . Thai Buddha sticks ( pot) and H crept in around 77-78 big time . There was a bit of acid around and bikie speed as well. A great time was had by all for many YEARS . It was really wild . The bouncers were hardcore and there was always fights . Wally was obviously a bit of a dealer ( look up the lyrics) He obviously had a bad Heroin habit and he got busted and was coming down ( drying out) in jail .
