The reason a Mercator projection is so wonky is that it preserves the angles between latitude and longitude lines. So if he takes the map too literally, he should at least have the correct heading down. I understand the Mercator projection distorts things _a lot_ as you get closer to the poles, but, growing up, we had plenty of globe experience in second grade to realize the flat maps aren’t good for comparing relative size of countries. ---

I couldn’t tell you what grades this happened in, but I do know we were taught many times, that the Mercator comparative sizes were not accurate. I can’t believe someone who has graduated high school in the US would not know that. ---
