As an anecdotal data point, I remember my first weekly reader poll, which I took during first grade in 1980. I had no idea who my parents were voting for (and I assume now that it was Carter), but I remember looking at the old guy, and thinking that I would feel bad for him if he lost because he was kind of old and might not have a chance to be president again if he lost this one, so I voted Regan. So I was swayed purely by the picture (iirc, he wasn’t wearing a suit and seemed ‘grandfatherly’) and not by how my parents were voting. ---

Never did a Weekly Reader, but in 1992 I voted for Perot in a similar idea at school. Mostly because I didn’t really care and was joking around. The amusing part is that since I’ve had the ability to vote I’ve gone third-party. ---
