How does the board software decide to paginate the threads? Does it do so based on the number of posts?

From what I can tell, it’s 50 posts per page. If you notice, threads never go to 2 pages until they have 50 replies, which makes 50 posts (1 OP and 49 replies) on page 1 and 1 post over on page 2.

Hope this helps.

Yes, it is based on number of posts. It is a setting you can select on the Admin screens. I choose the default of 20 for my place, to save on bandwidth.
