My kitten looks like she just stepped out of one of those paintings. Her eyes are absolutely huge, and what’s worse is her pupils are almost always dialated. Eeek! ---

I had two Keane paintings in my bedroom (early 60’s) of big souless-eyed things (a clown and a ballerina, I think), and I always thought the painter was Walter. But after googling around, I find that Walter was the onetime husband of the aforementioned Margaret and claimed credit for those early creations. She took him to court and had a paint-off to prove she was the artist. He refused to paint (shoulder hurt, according to his [2001 obituary.](http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2001/01/04/MNL141525.DTL)) Between the unblinking stares on my wall and the sound of ticking clocks (reminding me of my boogeyman, the ClockMan - a story told during Shirley Temple’s Children’s Hour, no less!), it’s remarkable that I ever got a decent night’s sleep as a kid. ---

**Jeep’s Phoenix** , I don’t remember what he did with the kids. But he was a man with a grandfather’s clock for a head. His tick-tocking would betray his presence right before he grabbed a kid. Scared the everlovin’ piss out of me. Of course, after the show, I’d have to go to bed. In my room. With a clock. And those wide dead clown eyes on the wall, watching . . . waiting.
