We’re not talking about _everybody_, dude - we’re talking about _Sarah Palin_. Who, on most matters of policy, is 99.44% ignorant, and has little interest in rectifying that.

Evidence to the contrary is welcomed.

Oh yeah, Palin doesn’t “constitute the vast majority,” either. She’s just one citizen out of 300 million.

Keep in mind that someone (Newt Gingrich?) said that the Republicans wouldn’t be the ones that would bring Obama down; it’d be the Democrats.

Both could end up being correct.

I think you miss the point. Most of us would not find the fact that half of the population disagrees with us, or even thinks badly of us, to be reason to “self assess”. Palin is in this aspect at least not much different than the rest of us, each pretty confident that we are right and that those who disagree are wrong. Sure, some like her are more smug about it than others, some don’t know enough to know how little they know as they say, but most of us are willing to dismiss even a vast majority who disagree with us. “Truth” is not a popularity contest afterall.

Oddly enough, [according to NewsMax](http://www.newsmax.com/kessler/palin_resignation/2009/07/06/232320.html), a solidly right-wing news and opinion site, you may be correct. There’s a devastating article there about her, featuring such observations as:

> [@](#):
>
> But unfair as media attacks and ethics complaints against her have been, insiders say Palin has succumbed to a paranoia that underlies a string of misjudgments she has made since her defeat in the November election.
>
> While she had no qualms about letting her daughter talk about her out-of-wedlock pregnancy on national television, Palin herself has become so suspicious of the media that she has rejected hundreds of requests by even friendly reporters to interview her. Her press aides say that before considering interviews, she insists that they comb through reporters’ work, even if they write for a friendly, conservative publication.
>
> [snip]
>
> Palin’s biggest supporters have been appalled at her transformation.
>
> [snip]
>
> Thus, in contrast to the self-confidence and sunny demeanor that won over so many, Palin has become a sulking, suspicious diva. Quitting the governorship with 18 months left in her term only confirms that impression.
>
> [snip]
>
> In short, Palin seems to have lost what so many of us admired her for — her nerve.

Wow. When NewsMax – _ **News freaking Max!** _ – weighs in like this, you know she’s toast politically.

> I’m not sure I agree. I don’t think any of her press time was Alaska based. Actually, I think the only Alaska-centric coverage she got was scandal-like. Touring about without questions or ties lets her ride the original coattails unencumbered.

But being current governor of Alaska is something, whether or not you’re interested in Alaska politics. Once you’re “on the map”, then people are interested in other aspects of your personality and opinions on other subjects as well. Being a former 2 1/2 year governor of Alaska is a lot less, and as time goes on that brief governorship will recede further and further into the background.

I’m not saying she falls off the map completely - she’s a part of history as vice-presidential candidate, but she is going to be diminished more and more as time goes on, and her stature was pretty shaky to begin with.

Well, be fair – the required qualifications are a lot lower for governor, after all.

No, I think I’m getting his point quite well. What I hear **begbert** saying is that almost everyone _dismisses opposing ideas without ever engaging with them_, and our dismissal of Palin, as merely one for-instance of that, is as meaningless as all the others.

I’m calling bullshit on that.

Here’s some [good/“news”](http://www.salon.com/politics/war_room/2009/07/07/steele_palin/index.html) on her future plans:

> [@](#):
>
> There are few, if any, people who actually know whether Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin is planning to run for president in 2012. But Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele has never worried too much about whether he actually knows what he’s talking about, and so he felt free to comment to Fox News about Palin’s plans.
>
> “Not having talked to the governor, I take 2012 off the table right now simply because given everything she’s going through personally, dealing with the financial mess that all these ludicrous investigations have put her and Todd in, at the moment, I think she’s trying to focus on getting her house in order, her personal house in order,” Steele said. “I look forward to welcoming her out and helping us in our campaigns this fall if and when shes ready to do that. Sarah Palin will be the ultimate arbiter of when she will engage and how she will engage.”
>
> This actually seems to be more of a reflection on Steele and his power within the GOP than anything else. Palin reportedly called former Vice President Dick Cheney and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani in recent weeks. But she still hasn’t spoken to the titular head of her party, who’s completely in the dark about her plans.

No, that’s the opposite of the point. **Begbert** was responding to **Onomatopoeia** :

> [@](#):

saying that it’s actually quite easy for most people to ignore naysayers, and that therefore he, **begbert** , would not predict that Palin will reassess her own actions or positions as a result of recent criticisms.

Just a quick Wiki check makes it look as if that’s incorrect. She was on the Wasilla city council from 1992-1996. She was elected mayor in 1996 and it seems as if she served out two complete three-year terms.
