Yes, but what do you do once all the shelves are full? Do you have room to put up more bookcases or is it time to cull the herd?
I’m in the process of sorting hardbacks, trade paperbacks & mass market paperbacks. Some will be saved, some will be dumped into the recycling bin (why did I buy *that *one?) & others will go to new homes. There’s a neighborhood used bookstore, although they’ll probably offer me a discount on future purchases rather than hard cash. And the coffeehouse had a used book bin, which could be reinstated. Some of the ancient paperbacks are worth one more re-read, during which they will disintegrate…
I love my Kindle, but it often recommends books that are too expensive in digital form. So I’m not done buying “real” books…
My grandfather’s house was ALL bookshelves. There wasn’t a square inch of wall space that wasn’t a bookshelf. And he had read every single one of them and lovingly wrapped them in wax paper. I cannot rest until I’ve lived up to his legacy. It is my birthright.
Heh… I’ve got bookshelves over most of my windows… The “view” through a book is better than the real view outside!
But, yeah, it is time to cull the herd. I’ve got books on top of books; books behind books; books on top of everything else. Plus, to be horribly honest, a lot of books I damn well know I’ll never read again. Time to find a nice used-book bookstore or a library…
When you take 8 big boxes of books to donate to the used bookstore and come home and can’t even see where they were on the shelves which are still full…you know you have an obsession, I guess.
Yes, I’m asking because our four Billy bookcases–each with two extra shelves and the extra top shelf–are overflowing and it’s time to do something about it. After culling paperback mysteries I’ll never get back to, free classics seemed like the next best alternative.
I have lots of attractive uniform editions and lots of nonfiction books with lots of pictures. Those you may pry from my cold dead hands.
