I ranked this movie third of my favorites of 2019. In what is probably an all-time first, all three of them were actually nominated for Best Picture (the other two being _Marriage Story_ and _Once Upon a Time in Hollywood_). Cinematically it is masterful. There are certainly poor families that are as dysfunctional and shortsighted as to do something that foolish when given such an opportunity. But they would not be the same families who would be able to pull off this operation to begin with. That is a fundamental paradox of this movie: people who are that dirt poor generally do not have the wherewithal to be so competent; and people who are so smart and competent are rarely going to be that poor on into middle age (I’m not saying there aren’t very smart people in the working class, but why couldn’t the father and mother get chauffeur or housekeeper-level jobs previously?) At least not in the US: maybe it’s different in South Korea. ---

Man that is sad. I liked Lee Sun–Kyun’s breadth of roles and he has such a lovely family. I thought his drug allegations were overblown too but that’s from perspective of my locale here. ---

I thought it was a ridiculous movie, and didn’t sit through till the end. I failed to see anything entertaining. The characters were ridiculous as was the ‘plot’, for lack of a better word.
