_Lots_ of people neither watch porn nor keep up with porn stars, and of those, a large subset likely only hang out with other like-minded non-porn-watchers. Finding someone with a porn dupliname formed out of perfectly normal name parts should not be surprising at all. And how many muggles was googling potential baby names\* in 1999\*? Not to _find_ names, I mean, but for porn star conflicts. ---

You know this reminds me of a contest that a dj in la used to do … it was called "pony or porn star " What he did was get a list of all the my little pony character names and a list of porn star stage names and when you called in and hed pick one and youd have to guess which one it was At one time they went 3 weeks with out a winner … ---

If you know a Debbie you can bet she was born in the '50s and have very good odds of being right; Jenna is the Debbie of the '90s. I am not prudish and have heard of a few porn stars’ names but would not have been able to immediately identify that name as having been a porn star. I’d know I heard it before but not sure where. I think few of my peer group would be able to. Linda Lovelace, Marilyn Chambers, Seka, Traci Lords … that’s about as far as I could go associating female names with having been famous in the industry. Nina Hartley not from the time but from Boogie Nights. I honestly think there are many many more who share shoe size with Ulf and me and that virtually none of her peer group associate her name with a porn star famous back when they were kids. The wtf the parents were thinking? “Jenna … I like that name. What do you think honey?” ---

So surely the name got out there beyond porn consumers. Still, most people understand coincidences. ---

The first _Freakonomics_ book had a chapter on this. The conclusion was that an unfortunate name really doesn’t screw you for life - though it may serve as a class marker. Their most memorable example was a fellow who named his eighth son “Winner”. Sounds like a unique, but not abominable, idea, right? Then he had a ninth son. Loser. He named the kid Loser. The irony is that Winner became something of a career criminal (I don’t recall the details, but it wasn’t a happy life), while Loser became a well-regarded police officer. Everyone just called him Lou. I suspect that might be young Jenna’s best strategy - start going by Jay or something. I started going by the first name everyone calls me now when I went to college. It has nothing whatsoever to do with my given name, which I was sick of by the time I was 18. ---
