The Mrs. had tears streaming down her face from laughing so hard. I was horrified at the fact she had a 20lb lasagna in a foil pan, with nothing supporting the bottom. ---

Look, I like Paris Hilton. I even think she’s fairly intelligent. But don’t make her out to be anything other than what she is: a fantastically privileged person who has leveraged that into even more personal wealth and privilege, while providing nothing more than her presence in return. ---

Most probably don’t even try. Yes, she scored a home run from third base. But her having the audacity to be born into wealth is no fault of hers. And self promotion is NOT an easy thing to do. The market is fierce with competition. She succeeded where others born into wealth have failed miserably. I think she’s due at least a modicum of credit. ---

Isn’t that what this whole thread is about? Paris Hilton has leveraged her notoriety into an incredibly lucrative income stream. The point I was making is simply that it has been a conscious choice for her, which she has been very successful at, and is therefore indicative of being an intelligent person. It sounds like you agree. What’s interesting is that there are people here who are criticizing her for merely inheriting her wealth and people are criticizing her for working for her wealth. She probably could have pulled off a trust fund lifestyle, but apparently she had greater ambitions. Now, you may mock those ambitions because you don’t find her ‘schtick’ to be any good, but I think it would be foolish to mock it because you don’t realize it’s her ‘schtick’. Andy Kaufman did the whole ‘outrageous person, and you don’t know if he’s being sincere’ thing, too. ---

The crowd booed and the media was promoting the fact that she sucked and didn’t know what she was doing. She actually had to learn how to DJ, how to make her name something that was a draw for people when she DJed. I imagine that is the case today, because she doesn’t have a TV show anymore, and while she’s a “name”, it’s just as easy for that name to kill you as save you. It’s not hard for a celeb to become a has-been working for scraps. ---

It generally doesn’t make a lot of news when they tend to be good at things - so it does seem like Hilton worked at it and became reasonably good at the DJing job. ---

It’s supposed to be over-the-top clueless and not meant to be taken seriously. It’s just a schtick. Essentially, a troll job. If Paris Hilton actually made a real video of herself making a lasagna properly, it would get nowhere _near_ the notoriety and hits this does. ---

I think the point of the video was to sell her merchandise. It sure looked to me like she was trying to sell the tea towels, perfume and other tchochkes she was playing with.
