What the heck did she say? 😕 Someone keep **twickster** away from the hard liquor, huh? Anyway, my mom gave birth to me in a hospital in Saigon, Vietnam in 1973, just a couple of months shy of her own twentieth birthday. Four months later, my family came to the United States, a journey made possible by my Dad’s American citizenship. This, of course, means that I basically grew up in America, and notwithstanding my biracial heritage, have come to think of myself as an American. I look back on this with mixed feelings. For example, as a little boy, I clearly recall my Mom trying to teach me Vietnamese. She would write me out little lists of words, and make me ask for things in Vietnamese. I refused to learn, probably in part because of the difficulty, but more because of the fear of appearing different. I think most eight year old boys share that fear, the fear of sticking out or appearing “weird”; in my case, learning Vietnamese would only have served to underscore the fundamental difference between me and the other kids at school. Looking back, I believe Mom may have tried to teach me Vietnamese, at least in part, to keep herself from loneliness. She didn’t speak English well in those early years, and must have felt crushingly lonely and homesick. She may have just wanted someone she could talk to, and I didn’t help. These days, I speak Spanish and French as well as English, and I would gladly trade both for the chance to go back and keep a lonely, homesick girl company. ---

(Host Notes: Malcandra’s Britishness, travelogue of exotic locations, taste for dangerous predators, and unusual wardrobe seems to suggest that he is/thinks he is Steve Irwin. I’m confident enough in this to hazard a guess sometime today. Kat’s quirk does look similarly nailed, but I want to wait for an official mod word on the tally before I use my guess for her. Blaster looks like he might be referencing other people’s posts in some way - he’s been using the same turn of phrase as some of the other guests, but I can’t quite narrow it down yet.) **Diomedes** , may be have an official count of who’s already been guessed correctly and/or incorrectly? ---

I was getting “explorer,” but was expecting more along the lines of “monocle and pith helmet” for what he wears to work. I’ve never watched Steve Irwin – is “bluish gray uniform” correct for what he wears? Most of the pix I’ve seen have had him in khaki, IIRC.
