# Passport renewal--where to start?

If you are applying for a first-time passport or if your expired passport was issued more than 15 years ago, you can’t just mail the forms in. You have to apply in person at a [Passport Acceptance Facility](http://iafdb.travel.state.gov/), which includes many U.S. post offices, clerks of court, public libraries, and local government offices that will accept passport applications on behalf of the Department of State.
