Good looking, yes, but harmless. Parents could easily smile when their daughters swooned over Pat Boone, he was as threatening as cottage cheese and almost as spicy. Not like that rockabilly lout, Elvis. ---

Not like that rockabilly lout, Elvis. For younglings who may not know who Pat Boone was/is, but who have seen _Dreamgirls_, he’s kinda sorta in that. The movie’s fictional of course but the characters are all patterned after real people; the Dreamgirls and their manager are loosely based on The Supremes and Berry Gordy obviously, while Eddie Murphy is a composite of several performers- Ike Turner, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, James Brown, etc.. In the movie Eddie Murphy’s character (Jimmy “Thunder” Early) has the hit (on the R&B charts) with _Cadillac Car_- a hard core sound for the time- then hears the almost unrecognizable emasculated acoustic version of the same song being sung by a white guy in beach attire. _That’s_ Pat Boone. He sang soulless versions of pre-Motown R&B hits, some '50s rock hits, etc., and usually sold far more copies than the original artist because grandmas in rocking chairs would buy them as well as teenagers. His biggest of this variety was probably Little Richard’s _Tutti Frutti_, but he did songs that had been recorded by Ike Turner, Elvis, and others with a Lawrence Welkified beat (or lack of). The music industry being even more notoriously corrupt then than now (which is saying something) many of the writers of these songs were completely screwed out of their royalties, so in addition to Mr. Whiteshoes selling millions with a bastardized version of their song, they didn’t see any money from it (which in fairness wasn’t Pat’s fault- it was the way the game was played). Twenty years later he got into some trouble over an acne product he pitched in an early ancestor of an infomercial. (It wasn’t 30 minutes, but it did run 2 or 3 minutes- basically the marketers bought up the entire commercial break on afternoon TV.) He claimed his daughters had all benefitted from the product Acne Statin and he wholeheartedly endorsed it. It was later learned that the product at the time had almost no effect on acne nor had any of Pat’s daughters suffered from acne, and the FCC actually fined him a good bit of money. Since then it’s very rare for celebrities to personally _endorse_ a product- they’ll be the celebrity spokesperson, but they rarely claim to use it themselves, and if they do they’re probably telling the truth. ---
