Anybody who cares anymore already knows who wrote it all by himself. And those who know it don’t really care anymore.

You know we’ve gotten past 9/11 when Sir Paul and Yoko are yipping at each other again…

F. U. Shakespeare’s Rule:

Paul wrote 90% of the Beatles’ _good_ songs; John wrote 90% of the Beatles’ _great_ songs.

> And really, why does everyone feel free to knock Paul? Because John wrote lyrics that sound like they should be meaningful (even though they generally didn’t mean anything)? Because John’s dead and has a greater legacy because of it? Because Paul actually had a sense of humor (“When I’m Sixty-Four,” “Her Majesty”)?! We’re talking about the guy who wrote “Yesterday,” “Eleanor Rigby,” “Penny Lane,” “Hey, Jude,” “Blackbird,” and “Let It Be.” Lay off. \*\*

You’re buying into Paul’s silliness. There is absolutely no convention I am aware of in publishing that states that the order of the names credited reflects the relative contribution of the collaborators. It does not work that way, it is not supposed to be interpreted that way, and Paul is trying to right a wrong that is completely in his own mind.

If he feels he is being slighted somehow by “society” with regard to his relative contribution to pop culture, perhaps he’s right. But that slight is not an offshoot of 40 years of having his name second. Having your name second signifies…nothing. The phrase “Lennon-McCartney,” on the other hand, has transformed into something magical to those of us who love the Beatles. Why would he want to mess that up?
