Paul Wellstone of Minnessota dead

My sad condolences to you all and to his family.
:frowning:
(I hate plane crashes.)

Paul Wellstone was the only politician I was ever excited to vote for. I don’t know what else to say besides that.

I can’t add what others haven’t said, but I can add one more voice:

I disagree with the thinking that Wellstone supported, but I truly believe he was a good, honest man who stood up for what he believed in and didn’t sell his soul for the votes. If there were more like him in politics this country would benefit immensely.

Paul considered running for President. Imagine what a person like that could do as President. Yes, Paul Welstone’s life is proof that all is not dark in the world.

I lived in Minnesota when Sen. Wellstone was first elected in 1990, and supported his bid for the senate. He garnered a lot of attention for his humorous, inventive campaign ads, and won an upset victory, the only senate candidate that year to defeat an incumbent. Few politicians have been as honest and forthright about what they believed and still managed to get elected. I also had the pleasure of seeing Sen. Wellstone speak at my college in the spring of 1992, and discovered that he was as humorous and personable as he had appeared in those political ads from a few years ago.

Since his tragic death, speculation has turned to who might replace him on the general election ballot. The favorite at the moment seems to be former Sen. and VP Walter Mondale, who at 74 is 4 years younger than New Jersey’s replacement candidate, Frank Lautenberg. It is not known whether Mondale will make the race, but he is Minnesota’s most well-known elder statesman on the democratic side and would certainly garner a lot of support.

There are actually psychos out there that believe that the pres had something to do with this tragedy…
Un-Freekin-Beleivable!!!

:smack:

Okay, I’ll admit, it did pass my mind when I first heard the news. I didn’t think of the pres, I just thought it may be some right wing nut. I used to work with a guy who stated more than once the “Wellstone should be taken out”. Paul had very few fans in the Ultra-Conservative/Militant Pro-Life/Gun nut demographic here in Minnesota. And with a race as important as this one, which polls showed Paul leading, AND having national implications. I will admit it. The thought crossed my mind that he was assasinated.

The thought didn’t last long, but it was there, for a fleeting moment.
