Well, Pavlov gets all the credit, but is there any reference to name of his slobbery dog who did all the work?

Pavlov didn’t just work with one dog, he had many. And since he “altered” them so that they couldn’t bark and so that he could actually measure their saliva flow, I doubt very much any of lasted long enough after the experiments to claim their fame.

yeeecchhhh! btw, my physics prof tells me benjamin franklin electrocuted turkeys in the interest of science-- funny how you never get the gory details until _later_.

I think that I read that Pavlov had given his dogs an operation that would bypass their stomach. So anything that they ate would pop out of their chests, so they got hungrier and drooled more. Whatever works.

Just because Russian scientists don’t mind sacrificing man’s best friend to science doesn’t mean they don’t give them names. A dog named Laika was the first living creature to travel into space, aboard Sputnik II in 1957. Unfortunately, it was a one way trip. The Russians didn’t make any plans for getting him back to Earth. They did, however spring for a plaque, prominantly displayed at Moscow’s Institute for Aviation and Space Medicine. He gave his life to beat the decadent capitalistic American space program.

Hey, I thought Laika was a girl. I didn’t know she want up as early as Sputnik II, but I believe you on that part.

</div>

Hey, I’ve got a question about Laika. How did she so up? Flat on her back? Sitting on all fours? I mean, how do strap a dog in? Maybe she was flat on her belly.

Is there a dogcicle floating around in space, or did Sputnik II fall back to Earth and burn up upon re-entry?

Here’s a link with a picture of Laika in his/her(?) Sputnik capsule. The dog is laying on its stomach. There’s also a picture of an American space chimp.
