One more question for SA, assuming he hasn’t given up on this thread:

Exactly how old were you during the '50s? And in what region(s) of the US did you live? Someone who was born in '49 is not necessarily going to have any better insight into what American culture was like back then than any reasonably well-read adult who was born a decade later. Likewise, if you spent the whole decade living in some small town in the Midwest, you might have a distorted view of what life was like in the big cities, or the deep South during that timeframe.
