PC repair: power supply shopping

I recently built my first PC and the PS I chose for it was the CORSAIR CMPSU-450VX. It’s 80 PLUS rated and it’s very quiet. Right now it’s $60 (after MiR) at NewEgg and is shipped free. The folks at HardwareSecrets have determined that it’s internally identical to the highly rated Antec Earthwatts 500 W (currently $70 at NewEgg), but using better electrolytic capacitors.

Their conclusion including words about the price and 450W label:

One new power supply, one computer working again.

Because this is my main rig and my DVR, I just didn’t want to wait for mail order, so I went ahead and spent the extra cash I would have spent on overnight for the convenience of a brick-and-mortar store and came home with a $44 Antec.

I also took the time to un-gunk my CPU’s heat sink. Man, was that thing dusty.

Anyway, thanks to all!
