It was long well known in the business sector he was never a very good negotiator and never a very good manager.

He has a certain brilliance in marketing but that can not over come his other incompetences.

I was amused to read yesterday an article in Flipboard (merci Samsung preinstalls) of the producer of the show Apprentice citing their challenges in editing the show to make it seem coherent as Trump would go off in directions that made no sense and was not supported by the actual perforances, but he did not pay attention, would react to the last stimulus he had, etc…

Sadly the American right has bought into a man who is a clear con man of mediocre real skills… it is disappointing to see.

>
> In other words, Master Negotiator turned down $25B earlier this year, so make him suck up to giving away a lot more for a lot less. Win Win. Dems get DACA and a whole bag of Santa’s goodies, and trumpy gets $5 large that won’t do jack. This is a fire sale. $5B is prolly less than what the Koch brothers are spending, and the bang for the buck is huge. And next time this wannabe terrorist wants to “negotiate” then bring down the price tag and ante up on the quid pro quo. It’s a rationale way to extract maximum gains for minimum dollars.

This strategy _ **might** _ work in normal times, when the President and his party that has the majority in the Senate are working more or less in unison toward their party’s goals. These are not normal times.

In order for the House Democrats to advance any of their own legislative goals, they have to negotiate with the Republican Senate to get something that will pass both houses. _Then_ they have to be sure that the President will sign the legislation, _or_ that the Republicans in the Senate will over-ride his veto. As far as I know, there have been no Senate veto over-rides of this President, and no signs that any are forthcoming. Therefore, the House Democrats have to have some assurances that a mutually-agreeable bill will get through both houses _and_ that someone who has proven himself time and again to be a faithless “negotiator” will stand by an agreement to sign said bill.

House Democrats would have to be complete and utter idiots to count on the President’s word regarding anything, and leadership, at least, are not idiots.

The American right doesn’t want to know anything that doesn’t fit in their narrative of what the truth supposedly is. They’re in an information bubble. They will be the last to know and acknowledge how utterly disastrous and incompetent he turns out to be, and even then, probably only a quarter of his supporters would even consider acknowledging it then.

This is going to get worse before it gets better, partly because I don’t think people realize yet how consequential his fuck ups are going to be. Despite the stock market roller coaster, the economy is seemingly pretty good at the moment. But that will change. Trump is a chaos president and he’s hiring people based not on their skills, knowledge, and competence, but on their wealth and loyalty. That usually doesn’t end well.

Yes, Trump ran on building the wall.

And many of the members of the House of Representatives ran on opposing the wall.

They were elected on opposition to the wall.

Why should they have to cave and break their election campaign promises to their base?

The _best_ case scenario is that Congress passes the bill, Trump vetoes, then his veto is overridden. That completely shuts out Trump, and shows to congress that they can get things done without him.

He no longer would have any leverage, or power, or any standing whatsoever, and would simply be a lame duck till he is voted out of office in 2 years.

Whether or not the republicans can muster the votes is another question.

Trump & Co are trying to sell the idea that Nancy Pelosi is slacking off in a far-off exotic land–she and her family are on vacation in Hawaii–and therefore Democrats Are Awful etc.

No doubt it works with Trump fans, most of whom still don’t realize that Hawaii is a state. (Nor that Congress isn’t in session, nor that the Republicans are still in full control of the government and thus if anything is to be done pre-January 3, it’s the Republicans, not Pelosi, who’d have to do it.)

The Border security bill with legislative changes to support DACA is back on the table.

The original bill has already been discussed earlier in this thread. Trump stupidly rejected that bill last year.

This is a step in the right direction. DACA has been a great program for young immigrants. It’s something the Democrats support.

I understand the political climate has changed. It will be harder getting a revised DACA / Border security bill through Congress.

Yes, the same kind of bill that Trump twice said he would support last spring, until his hard-line supporters turned on him, and he broke the deals.

Why is there any reason to think he can be trusted this time, when he broke the deal twice before?

Really, you need to ask Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, and Stephen Miller what they think of the deal and DACA. They’re the ones who seem to have Trump’s balls in a vise on this issue.

Trump is seeing the reality that his dream of a wall is dying.

Bundling it with DACA may be the only way to get some limited funding for construction.

I’m hoping maybe this time Trump will grab that lifeline. Otherwise he’s S.O.L.

It’s important to protect DACA. The only thing protecting it now is a court ruling. That could change in appeals.

Has the Supreme Court reviewed the lower court ruling on DACA? Have they said if they’ll accept the case? I’m not sure where it is in the appeals process.

There’s some urgency to get legislation before it’s too late.

Pelosi is not the problem here. I’m sure she could make a wishlist that would sell the wall to her fellow Dems - everyone in this thread could probably write that list - but a) she is not the House Speaker at this time and b) Congress is on holiday. Also: c) Pelosi & Congress already put a bill in front of Donald and he’s the one who fucked it up.

Trying to make this Nancy Pelosi’s responsibility ignores the reality of the situation that the problem is Donald’s complete lack of good faith. Donald’s response to the Daca for Wall funds swap, “Interesting”, as if he hadn’t torpedoed that move last year, show’s that he’s still not being an honest dealer. Attempting to cast this as the Democrats playing semantic games because obviously it’s not going to be a _wall_ wall is just more dishonesty. Trying to say Pelosi or Schumer are responsible for solving this just provides Donald cover for his bad faith.

Personally, I’m still not convinced that Donald understands that he is not going to get a check made to cash with this money. At this point, I would never vote for wall funding until we’ve seen the actual plans, including construction costs, complete route, a plan for the Rio Grande, maintenance roads & eminent domain seizures. I also want the accounting department to review the plans and gives us a real tally. And I want a line by line accounting for where that 5 million is going to go. It’s time to show us the specifics here.

I think we should keep in mind that Trump doesn’t really want a wall, or care if it’s actually built. (If he really cared about getting an actual wall built, he had a pathway to make it happen before, (and still does), yet he hasn’t even tried to follow those.)

All Trump wants is the rhetorical battle around the wall, and the optics that provides. We can’t understand this situation if we don’t realize this.
